Annoying Dialog Boxes

Windows 11
Good day everyone. I recently upgraded to Win11 on a new pc and everything has gone very smoothly. However, I have one app that continually shows two dialog boxes each time I open the program ( see link ). East-Tec Eraser support does not have a fix so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to remove or hide these boxes permanently ?
I realize Wordpad is gone with recent update and that's ok with me but I don't need to be informed about it all the time. There is a second box right after WordPad thatidicates Norton 2008 is also not found on this pc, very irritating. Would love to have these boxes eradicatedUntitled.webp if possible. Thanks for any suggestions. Cheers

You can get WordPad back, so you get rid of the annoying message:

What about Norton 2008? You had that installed before? Just reinstall it.

Haven't had Norton 2008 since 2008, don't know where that came from. Thanks for the link to WordPad spapakons. Installed without any problems. Opened East-Tec again and the dialog box is still there so this must be a glitch with the app creators. I will continue to harrass them. Thanks for the help.

I would uninstall all of that junk software to solve the problem. You don't need norton and you do not need East-Tec Eraser. Wordpad has been removed from windows going forward, which is why you are getting that error.

Download and run the norton removal tool:

I have been a long time user of Norton and like that added protection unless someone can convince me the Windows built-in protection is quite acceptable.
Still thinking this is an app-related problem. Adding WordPad did not stop the dialog box from popping up again. Thanks for your thoughts andrew

Yeah I don't think you need a paid antivirus unless it offers a vpn or some additional features you find valuable.

Everyone feels differently.

But I am fine with defender and using malwarebytes as a second opinion scanner.

Also, its possible the program is trying to call wordpad from a location different then where it should be. If you are bold, you can hop into the registry to try to see if any keys can give you a clue. Is the wordpad error coming up as soon as you launch the software?

But honestly I would just remove norton and East-Tec Eraser as well and be done with it. If you need a product to deep format or sanitize most drive manufacturers offer a tool for that. Even windows can do it. Also nvme and sata ssd's due to the way they work should really only be sanitized or erased using the manufactures tool.

You may be right. Yes, error comes up immediately after launch so the app doesn’t like something. Will ponder removing apps, at least it isn’t a major issue just a nuisance.
Thanks for your input

I used Norton Antivirus until version 2006 that was too resource consuming and made my computer crawl. Ever since each new version is more demanding than the previous one. I used Avast Free Antivirus until I switched to Windows Defender. I haven't used recent Norton versions to see if they still slow down the computer.

I guess it has configured Norton 2008 as the default antivirus. See the application settings if you can change it to Windows Defender. It must also have configured WordPad as the default text editor. See settings if you can change that to Notepad. If you need a little better editor, install Notepad++

They don't slow down an up-to-date pc although they are heavily loaded with other protection options like software update, password manager, cloud back-up, etc that a lot of users don't necessarily need. Anti-virus and firewall are all I'm concerned about.

Just for everyone's knowledge, Defender is unavailable to anyone who doesn't have a Microsoft 365 subscription. I have Home and Business 2024 so Defender is not available to me. I have tried downloading from the store but I can't log in. Therefore Norton continues on ...

Unfortunately the East-Tec app has no prrovision in settings that controls any related programs. They are working on this issue as well.

Everyone has Microsoft Defender antivirus, it's built into Windows. The Microsoft Defender app in 365 is additional, and built on top of it.

Important: This article is about the Microsoft Defender app that is included with Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscriptions. If you're looking for information about the Microsoft Defender antivirus that is built into Microsoft Windows, see Stay protected with Windows Security.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

For the most part it's been renamed as 'Windows Security' these days. You'll find it in Settings > Privacy & Security. But the Defender name for the AV still lives on in parts of the OS, and as Windows Defender Firewall in the Control Panel.

If you have Norton 2008 installed try running Symantec Update to see if you have the last version of the components and virus database. I guess after updating it you might get rid of the warning since the relevant missing keys in the Registry will be added and it will be detected properly.

Just for everyone's knowledge, Defender is unavailable to anyone who doesn't have a Microsoft 365 subscription. I have Home and Business 2024 so Defender is not available to me. I have tried downloading from the store but I can't log in. Therefore Norton continues on ...

Unfortunately the East-Tec app has no provision in settings that controls any related programs. They are working on this issue as well.
As already pointed out, windows defender is built into windows under windows security.

Windows defender 365 is protection for pc's phones and tablets etc and includes microsoft family safety and other features. The protection level is the same on pc though.

Windows defender is built in, no sub needed.

This link also explains it:

  • What is the difference between Microsoft Defender and Windows Security?

Microsoft Defender also brings valuable device protection to iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac, with malware protection, web protection, real-time security notifications, and security tips (Defender does not replace existing malware protection on iOS and Windows devices).

Windows Security, formerly known as Windows Defender Security Center, is built-in security on Windows PCs to protect your device and data. Windows Security is pre-installed and automatically enabled. Windows Security includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus software that protects your Windows device and data against viruses, ransomware, trojans, and other malware unless non-Microsoft Antivirus software is active.

Roger that, thanks for this info, I will indeed look into it. I haven’t had Norton 2008 in 16 years so very perplexing as to why that box keeps popping up

could be a browser extension. Check your web browsers for any extensions and remove any you don't recognize. Look at all your installed programs and see if you have a safety scanner or other BS on your system and uninstall it.
