have you checked in Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose Default by file type
on that page in the search bar place > rtf <
click on rtf and assign wordpad as default for rtf files.

Wordpad has been removed in 24H2. If you have had the 24H2 upgrade then any Office suite can open .rtf, either MS Word or LibreOffice Writer could be assigned as the default.

If you still have 23H2 then you can save Wordpad for use after the 24H2 upgrade removes it.

Do this now if you wish to retain Wordpad for the future.

Wordpad is a deprecated feature and shortly to be removed (already removed in latest Dev Version). I find it handy when on other users pcs for creating quick letters etc. I see lots of posts re. alternatives, but they are not needed as you can copy wordpad wherever you like, Do this now if you...

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

the OP stated that wordpad had been re-installed by them good selves post #5.
even if it isnt then the OP can assign a program/word processor for rtf files as you have stated.

Tried the default by file type trick but still no go. This is obviously an isolated app problem that somehow got screwed during re-installation on my new pc. Even their own "fix" tool did not solve the problem. I will leave it their hands. A strange one. Thanks everyone for chiming in with worthwhile suggestions.
