I was wrong, Arthur C Clarke did not invent the space elevator, that was Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.

The Wikipedia article is a great piece of science fiction as we will never have a material strong enough to build one.

Yeah Delany and Heinlein are really great novels regardless of how old they are. Been tempted to look at the Three Body Problem (being a physicist). What has held me off is I expect I might be disappointed.

Another Herbert: "The Jesus Incident" . It is the sequel to "Destination: Void" . I liked this one.

If you want a fun old-school scifi novel, try "Have spacesuit, will travel" by Heinlein.

Another great IMO: "Stand On Zanzibar" by Brunner. A great dystopian scifi with many social predictions.

I have just finished The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu. Brilliant and so imaginative.
Last week I read Tau Zero by Poul Anderson. Also brilliant and imaginative. I hadn't read any fiction for decades but devoured these in short order. Will now search Amazon for hard sci-fi.

The Martian with Matt Damon was scientifically accurate but did not try and predict the future so was a bit dull. I liked Inception.

Arthur C Clarke's books were brilliant, especially Rendezvous with Rama.

My all-time favourite novel is Dragon's Egg by Robert L Forward Dragon's Egg - Wikipedia

It was Arthur C Clarke who posited the idea of man made satellites and he also wrote about the 'space elevator' proving that, at the time, there was no material strong enough to provide the tether. One day, space elevators might be a cheap way to lift objects into Earth orbit. He has done all the necessary maths!

A great read showing what happens when A.I starts going bonkers is Robert Harris's "The Fear Index" based on an automated stock trading system using the "VIX" - or volatility index!!. Brilliant read even if you know 0% about stock trading !!!

I don't read much fiction these days, but I do watch a lot of movies. I endorse 3-Body Problem (which I saw on Netflix) - I'm hoping for season 2. Otherwise, Interstellar (2014) has some proper science in it, and the portrayal of the planet near the black hole is impressive.
Strange Days (1995) is good, but showing its age, and is somewhat shocking in parts.
If you're into time travel, Predestination (2014) is a great mindbender.
Anything based on a Philip K Dick story, is always worth a view - Minority Report, Total Recall, Blade Runner but I'm sure you're already aware of those. I couldn't recommend 'The Puppet Masters (1994)' based on Heinlein's 1951 novel, even though it has the generally very good Donald Southerland in it. The book was great though.
I found "Second Variety" a novelette by Philip K Dick to be a seriously worrying story, when I read it in the late 1960s. It seems to me that it is potentially coming true with our present state of AI. The film "Screamers" (1995) is based on it, and is so-so.

@kelper You might want to have a look at some of the offerings from David Brin. He's a pretty hard sci-fi guy. Not really my cup of tea as I prefer a little less factual information in my fiction, but by the sound of what you are saying, you might enjoy one of his novels. Greg Bear is also worth consideration, IMHO.
