i was reading that others were having problems with win7 and 'wifi' mouse and keyboard.
but a 'wired' mouse and keyboard worked for some of them when trying to install win7.

it was a very old post.

I haven't plugged in the SSD yet but I expect to take a picture if it works. I'm pretty sure this old DVD is partly to blame. It looks pretty scratched up. I have a USB with a Win 7 install on it somewhere but I don't recall if it is Win 7 U or Professional. I'll be changing out the PSU on the test bench first because the board could use a little extra juice. I won't be putting it in the case until I know everything I need works together at least as well as my X99 build.

Sadly, now it wants a new product key and I'm not so sure I can comply with that as there is no longer any support for Win 7. Still, I did it. It was a fight again for the mouse and keyboard but I managed to fix it in SAFE MODE (an option I did not have with an attempt at installing fresh). Who would have thought that one could clone from a RAID 0 array back onto a non-raid drive and still boot from the clone? Amazing. Admittedly, it took a little work. I had to let CHK DISK do its thing and assume 'repairs' but it was worth it. The LEGEND lives on... Windows 7 Ultimate still lives!

Thanks for the offer, Steve. I'm pretty sure I have other copies somewhere. I'm just so darn disorganized these days. The old memory isn't what she used to be. Hang onto those. You'll never know when you might need 'em or who might approach you in the future for the last great operating system Microsoft ever made.

i will play with the bootloaders/managers win10 and win7 and see if i can get the win10 boot manager to boot a win7 USB
now that im back on Linux none of the windows files systems are restricted for me.
i also have access to the win10 bootloader which is booting win11 so i can compare.
i like challenges.

It always helps when you have someone cheering you on. Just in the midst of typing this I got another activation notification for Windows and clicked on it and lo, and behold, it is now activated! My Windows is genuine! I was concerned about that considering there is no more support for Win 7. Feels good.

Keep me posted as to your progress. Methinks this would be a handy skill to have. Right now I'm booting from BIOS. Win 7 doesn't even know Win 11 exists on this PC and I have half a mind to keep it that way.

You know, I've always wondered if there was a way to do this via Linux. I remember thinking about that when I used the FOSS method for multi-booting Windows via Linux. Indubitably, another handy skill to have. I've tried a few things like this but to no avail.

Further news: I almost have all the drivers in for the Win 7 U side of things. I just need to find the driver disc for the USB expansion card... It's uh... somewhere.

i have downloaded win7 pro 32 bit and 64 bit ISO's.
i can mount the ISO's to view the whole file system and will have a look at them later.

Finally got these in. Not a bad price considering they came from Germany.

Never really bothered much with E type USB 3.1 connectors. I never build a PC for anyone that wanted them or needed them, but the price was right and since it's native onboard connectivity I decided to give it a go. I never used the serial port slot on the X99 build anyway.

you will notice the speed difference when using USB type C connections to the MoBo especially for external HDD/SSD's
my wife's system has the backup drives connected to USB/C and it walks all over my backup drives connected by USB/3.

Yes, I'm well acquainted with USB C and my Thunderbolt 3 card provides it as well. I'm just new to the whole "E" type header thing. I'm guessing the difference between this and regular USB C is the amount of amperage you can charge devices with. I tested it after the hardware installation with a Lexar USB3 stick and it seems to work well. Imagine that! On Windows 7 no less. ;-)

yup. I knew it was too good to be true. Same old, same old intel turbo max technology 3.0 issue that I had with my Broadwell chip. Intel never fixed it and Microsnot doesn't give a rat's behind about it. I am STUCK with a yellow exclamation mark in device manager for eternity. :mad:

One of the main reasons I got this replacement board is to escape that very problem. In fact, if it were not for that very issue I likely would not have even considered a replacement board despite Broadwell not being Win11 compliant. Not even the legendary MoKiChU was able to solve this nasty and that's saying a lot. Microsoft could fix it but they don't care. Intel could also do a microcode but they don't care either. To let an issue like this carry over from one generation of CPU to another is just plain callous, unprofessional, and sloppy. Shame on Intel and their turdobust ticknology!
