Battlefield 2042 performance on Windows 11, Driver 496.76

Make sure the game is running in DX12 mode. For some reason it can sometimes turn this off and the performance tank. You can change this in settings and even force it in ROFSAVE_profile file by opening it up in Notepad and changing the line setting GstRender.Dx12Enabled to 1.

After this use the following graphics settings:

Texture quality: High
Texture filtering: Ultra
Lighting quality: Low
Effects quality: Medium
Post process quality: Medium
Mesh quality: High
Terrain quality: Medium
Undergrowth quality: Low
Anti-aliasing quality: TAA High
Ambient occlusion: SSAO
Ray traced ambient occlusion: Off
Nvidia Reflex: Off
High-fidelity objects: Ultra

Let me know if anything changed.

Look, its a 8 core 16 thread cpu running at 4.4ghz, Im gonna say its not the cpu tbf. I think its just where performance is at.
The game seemed to have taken a decent bump in system specs. I had a look and found some people anywhere between 70 and 120 on a 3080 at 2560x1440, also bear in mind the maps performance wise seem to vary quite a bit as well, Ive had maps where im using about 60-70% of my gpu on average and theres others where im high 90's for sure.
Ray tracing will save you about 15%, It is only ray traced AO though so aint as costly as full ray tracing but none the less, Doubt anyone uses that setting on seen as its a competitive multiplayer game with 0 campaign.

Depending on your settings you can have either 60-80fps or 100-140fps...some of the settings in the list I provided, doesn't change performance much but does make a difference. Others have HUGE impact.

Also changing render distance may improve performance a lot.

I will just repeat my question... If you get 70+ fps, why do you want more? I doubt you will ever see any difference, especially in fast action scenes.

Isn't really about seeing the difference, more of feeling the difference, Hey im a quality and resolution over fps guy, always have been, One exception, CS GO, i couldn't see more than 60fps but by god i could feel the difference at 400fps, 60 Felt laggy and slow, But that is a competitive FPS in its barebones form.

As mentioned before, you won't see a diff but you will def feel the diff with higher fps.

I think GstRender.Dx12Enabled is a redundant setting and is ignored. BF2042 is a DX12 game, and MSI Afterburner reports the game as using DX12. For a baseline I used the Ultra profile with Nvidia Reflex enabled which got me 68 FPS average on the Kaleidoscope map. With your settings I got 82 FPS average. Still 40+ FPS short of what I'm used to in a battlefield game, but useable. I think I'll keep them thank you very much :)

Edit: I gained a further 13 FPS by increasing the DRAM frequency from 2800MHz to 3000MHz. Timings remain at 14-15-15-35-T1.

GPU usage is not been as variable as yours. Don't know why that is, but I've haven't seen >=90% GPU usage in this game. I don't think it's the CPU either. If it was my CPU then I'd expect to see upwards of 80%+ CPU usage. I have a hunch BF2042 is sensitive to RAM bandwidth only because both CPU and GPU usage never reaches close to max. I hate stuffing around with RAM timings/voltages. My CPU's memory controller is not a good one.

I am on 2070 super so i'd imagine there would be some variance between the two in that regard, Certain parts of the map i can be in the 60's and at other times 90's

It is not as simple as that. Multicore programming is very difficult. Even if you could optimize the code to use as much as possible of your CPU resources, timing everything and keeping everything in sync is a very very difficult task. Everything will still be dependent on your fastest CPU core, which in optimal case is running the main game thread. If you get delays in this thread because some other process is "late" you can suffer from many frame skips each second.

Your issue could be as simple as L1/2/3 cache and RAM access latency issue in comparison to more modern CPUs. Actually you increasing the RAM frequency and you gaining a lot of more frames after that suggests this is the case.

To get a better view of what's going on while playing BF2042, you could try to log each individual CPU core. CPU usage, temps and frequency, GPU usage, temps and frequency while also monitoring frame times and RAM usage like usage and read/writes.

If you are using a third party antivirus (not Windows Defender), see if there is a game mode and enable it. In Windows Defender you can leave the online shield for security, but you can disable the file access shield to prevent any delays when accessing game files. Alternatively you can add the game folder to the exceptions.

Alder Lake L1 Cache: 32KB Instr, 48KB Data per P-Core; 32KB Instr, 64KB Data per E-Core

Haswell-E L2 Cache: 256KB Shared Instr/Data per core
Alder Lake L2 Cache: 1.25MB Shared Instr/Data per core; 2MB Shared Instr/Data per 4xE-Cores. 14MB in total!

Haswell-E L3 Cache: 20MB
Alder Lake L3 Cache: 30MB

You're absolutely right. This wouldn't show in CPU performance stats but would make a big difference to game performance. I can't push the CPU cache and RAM more than I already have, so further benchmarking and monitoring is pointless. The CPU is getting a bit crusty. Time to upgrade... when I value an extra 40+ FPS more than the money I'd have to spend to get it.

These days I use Windows Defender only. The problem is, my CPU is showing its age with BF2042, and possibly with Cyberpunk 2077.

Indeed. Those two games and also Red Dead Redemption 2 and many future AAA titles are beasts. They require quite a lot of both CPU and GPU. Not necessarily calculation performance but data throughput.

While you are on this a bit older CPU, rather config the games you play to have a bit lower but stable framerates at let's say 60 rather than try to push beyond 100FPS and get variation over 25%. The games will feel much smoother despite lower framerates because of stability.
