Solved Building a new rig, want some advice

I already have a 2TB nvme so I didn't need to purchase that. I found this article and modified it a bit:

I went with the AMD gpu as the nvidia seems to be low on vram in that price range, and more and more games are requiring much higher vram. So I would rather go with the 16GB vram vs the 12GB on the RTX 4070 for better future proofing. Although I know from current experience that dlss is awesome. Also my 1440p hdr monitor has freesync but not gsync though sadly.

I know AMD cards don't do raytracing as well, but I don't really care about that. I think cyberpunk looks amazing at ultra without the path tracing or ray tracing tanking performance. It sure looks good, but not worth the fps drop imho.

If I can get an nvidia card with a decent amount of vram at a good price I am all for it.

I would spring for the 7900 XT but its higher than I am willing to spend. Although the best buy deal for $659 is tempting.

I am trying to get the best bang for the buck and trying to be as future proof as possible. I know that the ddr4 ram is older, but from what I have read and seen it does not seem that dd5 makes a meaningful difference, though it would be a step back from my gaming laptop in my specs. (My current laptop has ddr5)

My questions are:

What if anything can be improved with this build for cyber monday pricing?
Is there a better case option? I like this case though seems to be pretty good.
I would probably need to order today for the best deals, is there anything obvious I am missing?

My needs are going to be using it for VR for half life Alyx and other pc only VR games as well as some other modern regular titles. However, I am a console boy and prefer getting most of my games on the ps5 due to pc "stutter struggle". Even though I game on pc from time to time, I really enjoy the console experience of it just working. I love my current gaming laptop, and have no major issues with it, but the low vram is getting to me on the 3050 mobile and preventing me from playing some things.

my only real concern would be investing in an AM4 socket at this point, as the AM5 sockethas been out for the previous and current Gen Ryzen setups (7000/9000) series. There won't be any upgradeability from the CPU standpoint going with an AM4 setup.

Yeah that's fair. I know that cpu is really good though, so I suspect it will be quite good for a long while. If worse comes to worse I can always update the board and cpu later. But unless I am missing something, I think it will last me 6 years or so until it gets long in the teeth. If you think I should move to AM5 though, it's worth thinking about.

I would need to look for some deals. The problem is the ram is free with the cpu which helps the price point quite a bit....

Yeah, they are great chips. My son has a Ryzen 3800x that is still kicking. I have a 5900x and my wife has a 5600x...and we don't have any problems whatsoever. (My machine is 4 years old this month). But I guess that is my point, my rig is 4 years old already. I didn't upgrade to the 7000 series, and have no real plans to upgrade to the 9000 series either. But if you are buying today, you are instantly buying into the land of the already obsolete.

In addition to the CPU and mobo, an AM5 upgrade would also require new RAM.

I don't think you'd get a $1k system with any AM5 system with a CPU with the X3D cache. Even omitting that, I'm doubtful that you could get a similar bundle with any good AM5 CPU for anything like your price.

Yeah I was looking at some prebuilds as well trying to find some deals cause I would be fine with that. A lot of them are using 4070 though and the vram is just too low I feel. More and more games are going to require more as the gens go on. Speaking from my experience it seems vram is way more important when it comes to games vs the raw horsepower of the gpu.

A 4070 has 12GB of RAM. I don't game, but I'd hope that'd be more than adequate. Are they really making games that need 16GB of VRAM to run properly? Can a high midrange CPU handle resolutions (3840 X 2160 or higher) that would benefit from lots of VRAM?

12GB is good now, but is the minimum recommended I was seeing people say. Games looking forward will use more. The last of us, hogwarts legacy etc are pushing 10GB of vram usage. For some reason a lot of games lately need a lot of VRAM, the cpu helps but the VRAM for the higher textures and things, especially unreal engine 5 apparently uses more.

If I am wrong hopefully someone will correct me but thats my understanding.

At what resolution? Just curious. Too lazy to look it up.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, i'm running an EVGA 3080 with 10GB at 2k on my box. I don't push graphics to the max, I usually pull a few things down to get the best framerates and smoother overall gameplay. I'd rather use less power draw and have a cooler card then pushing a graphic that I have to be trained to see.

Just a note: The 4070 Ti Super has 16 GB of VRAM if you were looking to go Nvidia (my recommendation - I've had it with the sub par performance of AMD cards). Although it will stretch your budget a little bit.

yeah I couldn't find it for a decent price so I was leaning at the amd card. I heard good things about the 7800xt so maybe the older amd cards were not as good?

At Newegg, a 4070 ti super is an $800 card.

(I wonder when the forthcoming RTX 5000 cards will be available, at anything close to MSRP?)

The 7800xt is more like in the first post ($450).

A few hundred here, a few hundred there, and the $1k PC becomes a $2k one.

Well I ordered!! Total came to $1,139. After I sell my laptop to a friend the whole build will cost only $560!!

The 7800xt sold out

I did some more research and more and more people said to just get the nvidia card even with the less vram. So I did. They said the dlss will make the card last longer and that is a fair point.

Some of us use dark mode. ^^

Red, blue or medium grey, seems to work the best on this forum for dark OR light mode.

This is what your first post looks like on dark mode...

It took me a while to figure it out too.

For example... check out the text, under my sig... on dark and light mode.

I have my monitor on zero brightness and I still can't handle light mode.
At 50% brightness it feels like this DELL U3011 is irradiating me. LOL

This is my desktop on zero% brightness....

I didn't find the RAM on the MSI compatibility list, but G.Skill has it on their list. Good.

One of those funky modular PSUs with the ports on the side? Cool.

Sorry about the delivery date on the GPU. I hope there's no issue with that.

I think it will be fine seeing as how I bought it around the holidays everything said it had a longer return window. Till around end of January.
