Can no longer drag & drop photos to anywhere

I finally upgraded to 22H2, and now I discover I can't drag & drop photos from Pictures to Paint, nor to Affinity Photo, nor anywhere else that I could do it before the upgrade. Selecting or not selecting 'Run as administrator' makes no difference.

Is there a setting or a workaround for this?

Geez, that's pretty well the worst thing that can happen to a production machine, you have my sympathy.

I know that my comment is not helpful, but this is the reason why I plan on waiting with moving my W10 production machine to W11 until it's no good any more to wait any longer, i.e. move to W11 just 6 months or so prior to October 2025 (EOL of W10)

Well, perhaps you can downgrade to W10?

Well, perhaps you can downgrade to W10?

I've had 11 for almost a year now (by force due to a bait & switch at Best Buy - nothing I can do about it), and I was putting off the upgrade to 22H2 indefinitely. And then today it pretty much forced itself on me, so now this is where I'm at.

Haven't had an issue but using @Brink's Copy To/Move To tweaks to the Registry given in the Tutorials bypasses the Drag and Drop and as I get older is more accurate.

Just applied it, and now I can drag & drop into Paint and Photos, but not Affinity Photo. Seems it only worked for MS products? Affinity is what I need it to work for the most.

That is strange, as I told you on another thread. It's strange in two ways, not only can I drag and drop to the taskbar in 22H2 for any app, but that function was missing in 21H2. I don't understand how you could have used it before, not unless you had tweaked your Windows to restore it. I had to use a third party app to emulate that function. If you did something similar perhaps it's interfering with the native function and you should undo any changes you made.

This program fixes the missing "Drag & Drop to the Taskbar" support in Windows 11. In the best case, such a simple and basic functionality will return to Windows 11 in October 2022. For now, we have to use workarounds in the OS that was supposed to "empower our productivity".....

**UPDATE:** Windows 11 22H2 (build 22621 and 22622, released in September 2022) restores the drag & drop functionality natively, so this program is not longer needed.

Do you mean drag n drop onto their Taskbar icons?
or
Do you mean drag n drop into the open windows of those applications?

I had no idea that anyone would drag a photo into the taskbar icon of an application. Is that a normal thing to do??

Anyway, yeah, into the open window, which for 25 years I assumed was the way everyone did it, lol.

Never did anything to change anything. I rarely make tweaks unless absolutely necessary, for fear of breaking something. I know my way around a computer, but Windows is too unpredictable to mess with, lol.

Yes, very much so. I've been routinely selecting a bunch of photos in File Explorer then dragging over the icon of a running photo editor app in the taskbar. The app then comes to the front and I drop them all into it. This functionality has been in every version of Windows since Windows 7, but was conspicuous by its absence in Windows 11 21H2. Hence my need of 3rd-party help to fix it until it was restored in 22H2.

Maybe it's a glitch with the new Explorer, the way they're messin around with it!
Maybe it's a File Protection thing..., Windows is so anal about security all over the place!

22H2? ...now I have to check security settings & stuff. The hunt begins. But it's all so weird, because after a registry tweak I can drag & drop into Paint, Photos, but not Affinity.

The first place I'd look is in Controlled Folder Access, and I'd make sure your Affinity has been added to the allowed apps list. My PainShop Pro is.

Interesting. I never once thought of dragging into a Taskbar icon, or any icon. I've always went straight into the open window.

Just tried it, and it still doesn't work well. In fact, it wants me to pin the photo onto the icon. So I do that, which then also pins the app to the Taskbar. Once I've done that, I have to right-click the icon, and the photo name is there to click on, and it will open in the application (but not in Affinity). Then I have to unpin the app from the Taskbar.

The way it works is that you click and drag to the taskbar onto the icon of an app that is already running, the app's window then opens and comes to the front so you can drop into it. It would only offer to pin if there was no app running.

Controlled Folder Access is already turned off, so that can't be the issue. Good suggestion, though.
