Can no longer drag & drop photos to anywhere

It should be working like this in 22H2. Here I have PaintShop Pro open, but minimised to the taskbar. When I hover over its icon on the taskbar it's windows opens, then I can drop the files into it.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. That would be good but it doesn't do that for me. Something went wrong with the upgrade, I suppose I should be glad that nothing worse happened, but I do a lot of work with photos and images. 🫤

If it isn't a file security issue, it's got to be an Explorer issue!

It's issues like these that keep rearing their ugly head, over and over and over!
All of a sudden you've got a sh*t load of work to, and you find things aren't functioning they way they did an hour ago, before you upgraded!
Frustrating as hell!

Wouldn't hurt..., it's free to try..., it might make a difference, especially if you run it in W7 mode.

I have to confess though, I also use QTTabBar with special drag-n-drop features but, I don't think that has a bearing on my capabilities/non-capabilities! I'm not going to uninstall QT just to find out though, way too much work!

Have you tried holding Ctrl, or something, while dragging?

Yeah, same result. Very weird issue. From Windows 3.1 right through 10 I could solve every issue that came up, even if it meant some unorthodox fixes. But 11 has given me two unfixable issues within one year. The first one was after downgrading from 11 to 10 on another machine, and I could no longer use any printer. Had to clean reinstall 10. And now this drag & drop issue.

Not impressed.

Interesting discovery:
Using the "Open with" option in the context menu, I can open a photo in Affinity.
After that I can drag & drop into Affinity no problem; but only for that session.
Once I close Affinity, I have to use the context menu again to be able to d&d other photos.

Is it just me, or is that insanity?

I rarely open stuff via drag n drop though, I'll select all then open with custom right click context menu entries.
That's one of the reasons I wanted the msi installers for Affinity, so I could do that!

Yeah I've always opened the app first, and dragged into it. I suppose because that's how it was when I first discovered the ability many years ago. In fact, many times I drag a photo from my website gallery, and in those cases there is no context menu option to "open with" - unless there's a customization for that sort of thing. I don't often customize anything, but I will if necessary.

I will adapt, but it's still a stupid move on Microsoft's part.

That sounds to me like the entire problem is with Affinity or a Windows component that it calls up such as a dll.
I suggest you ask Affinity Support about the problem.

Open with should always be available.
But you can also put a shortcut to Affinity in SendTo to achieve the same result.
