Please point me to the appropriate thread if this has been asked before. I have two computers running Windows 11 Pro 22H2 connected to my home Wi-Fi router. One is my main computer (see 2nd system specs) sharing the folders I want to access from the other computer, a laptop/tablet hybrid Fujitsu Stylistic Q702. My main computer is connected wirelessly through a wireless USB dongle that supports only the 2.4GHz band, while my laptop supports both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz band. If I connect the laptop in the 2.4GHz SSID of my router, I can access the shared folders albeit with some lag. If I connect to the 5GHz SSID of the router it tries to connect and fails with an error that the shared resource was not found or something. I might be wrong, but since both computers connect to the same router it should not matter which band they are connected to. The router should bridge both networks, isn't that right? Do I have to change any settings on the router? Do I have to change anything in the computers?

Make sure that switching to the 5GHz network didn't place you in a "Public" network.

Open Settings > Network & internet to verify that you are in a Private network. NOTE: Screenshot below shows Ethernet, but idea is same for WiFi:

On that same screen, select Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings and make sure these settings are on:

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

It does sound like it's a router setting. The PC default settings should be OK.
All my PCs (Win7/10/11) connect to my router by WiFi, some at 2.4GHz others at 5GHz.
None of them have any problems connecting to any other.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I'll check both suggestions. Thanks. If it is the router I won't bother because we upgraded our connection and it will be replaced soon.

Most routers these days should concurrently be able to xmit at both bands.

Some decent wifi extenders such as NightHawk will get faster network throughput by accepting traffic from both bands concurrently as well . This pays real dividends if you connect to one of these extenders via a LAN port - preferably via a switch. Use a decent (and they are really cheap) LAN->USB adapter if cabling permits.

Will work far faster than bog standard 2.4 GHZ. Another advantage is that you can use FULL duplex rather than HALF duplex which is the default for older wifi equipment.

I'm using a VM currently so I've got a Virtual Ethernet adapter -- but on a REAL physical machine to set the parameters simply go to the advanced bar on the ethernet properties and you should see full duplex as one of the options. It doesn't appear on the Virtual adapter here as I'm not using a "Real" ethernet connection". but you should get the idea.

It would require to stretch cable across our house. No way, it doesn't pass the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). My wife would kill me.

My wife would be worse, make life miserable, she really likes the Notebook from the other room and printing ability [recipes and quilting] of Wi-Fi setup. The 5G is faster with most things but the 2G has longer range. The Router with a Switch has a NAS drive, 2 printers and 5 Desktops connected via Ethernet cable. The only real slowness I see is when connecting devices with 802.11n or slower adapters, the Router has 802.11ac. I have 25Mbps Wireless DSL Internet on a PoE Modem and dish-type antenna.

Edit: forgot to mention I don't Map computers, only the NAS drive and the Public folder on it and files/folders in it. My need is for access and storage of files from any computer I Map that drive whether Wired or Wireless/Wi-Fi, same for printers. An additional advantage is not having any particular computer running.

Hi Spapakons I think it is something relating to the "Band Steering" settings in your router, it has to be enabled.

If your router is dual band (supporting both 2.4 & 5GHz) as mine, is you can run both 2.4 & 5GHz at the same time. You just need to follow the router's instructions on how to do so. Sorry I can't provide instructions as each router is different.

That should be the case with my router too, but it is rather slow and many times we are even disconnected or very hard to connect. We restart it, it works for some hours and then it starts again. Latest issue is that I cannot find the other computer if I connect to the 5GHz band. We recently upgraded our connection speed and we are expecting a new router, so I don't bother.

All the routers I have ever had seamlessly let you use whatever band you chose. I never heard of one that didn't. In fact my current router is Wifi 6e and is tri-band with 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. All bands work seamlessly with each other.

I think your problem lies elsewhere. Note the 2.4GHz band has more range than the 5GHz band but the 5GHz band offers higher speeds. Could signal strength or interference be a problem? If that is the problem then hopefully, the new router will solve this.

You also have to contend with the problematic Windows 10 and 11 home networking. People have complained for years about network computers failing to see other at times.

My laptop is a few meters away from the router without walls, so both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals have 5 lines. In 5GHz I can see my computer in Network but it fails when trying to open it and access the shared folders. In 2.4GHz I see it and it does open.

Did you need a password for the 2G but haven't tried it yet on 5G? Whatever was done to gain 2G access should work on 5G if done the same way.

I have disabled password sharing in both computers and I have given full access to Everyone, so it is not an authentication issue. The error message states that the address (or path, don't remember) to access that computer cannot be found. It sees the computer on the network but when I try to access it fails with a message that the computer cannot be found! Weird.

I connected to my router's web interface and I found that the 2.4GHz band had SGI off (see link below), while the 5GHz band had SGI on. I turned it off. Maybe this was the culprit. I will test access from my laptop to the desktop using the 5GHz band and confirm if it works (I changed the setting from my smartphone while putting my son to sleep, haven't tested yet).

I tested with this setting, didn't make any difference. I changed the encryption from 40-bit to 128-bit in Advanced Sharing settings and I could connect. It seems there was a setting mismatch, the computer expected 128-bit encryption while the laptop was configured to 40-bit. It is weird how the 2.4GHz band worked, probably it wasn't affected by this setting. I received my new modem/router and replaced my old one. The 2.4GHz SSID and the 5GHz SSID were the same for "convenience" but my 2.4GHz-only Xiaomi repeater could not connect until I changed the 2.4GHz SSID to differentiate between the two. I will check if I also have full access to the shared folders with the new router and post back.

Akl good with the new router. I couldn't connect at first because the connection was set to public, but I set it to private and connected.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
