Hi everyone.

I updated to 24H2 from 23H2 with a USB created with the creation tool. I cannot update the PC. Either the update fails whilst downloading, or it reboots and then rolls back. It seems this is a known issue -

I am curious how many people are having this problem. In the meantime, I will wait for a fix from Microsoft.

I had problem installing the 24h2 from bootable USB but after performing few steps all went okay.

Turn off antivirus software before upgrading to 24h2.

Open the Command Prompt as admin and execute bellow commands one at a time:

Code:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

Chkdsk C: /r

You can use Rufus to download and create bootable USB flash drive.

In this guide, you will learn the steps to use Rufus to download the ISO file and create a bootable media to install Windows 11 from scratch.

I find RUFUS to be a better install method than Media Creation Tool

To create a Windows installation with Rufus, you can:

  1. Download the latest version of Rufus from the Rufus download page

  2. Insert a USB flash drive into your computer and make sure it doesn't contain any important data

  3. Run the downloaded RUFUS executable file

  4. Select the USB drive from the list of available devices

  5. Select the ISO file you want to use

  6. Configure the settings:
    • Partition scheme: Choose "MBR" for BIOS or UEFI, or "GPT" for UEFI only
    • File system: NTFS is recommended for Windows installations

  7. Click Start to begin the process

  8. Confirm that you want to proceed, as all data on the USB drive will be destroyed

  9. Wait for Rufus to complete the process
If doing a fresh install, you can also customise your Windows installation by clicking Start and following the prompts. The prompts/customisation will show after clicking “start”
For an update, complete an in-place upgrade.

Also, in this video, it will show you how to download the Windows version you want to install, directly via RUFUS before it creates the USB Media. During this tutorial, the download Windows via RUFUS is explained at the 4min 25 second mark.

After completing the above process, run an in-place upgrade to update the PC. Option Two.

Having done all this, I can not guarantee that your update will work. There may be other issues.

For what I understood, OP has successfully upgraded from Win 23k2 to 24h2.
The reported issue is it can't install updates.
The links he posted seems to show it is a 24h2 bug.

Oh yes, how did i miss that detail, thanks @Megahertz.

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

  • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
  • Go to System > Troubleshoot
  • Click on Other Troubleshooters > Windows Update and click Run button.

Download Windows updates manually.

  • Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
  • Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
  • Select the correct version and click Download
  • Click on the link and Windows will update your computer

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

One of the known issues for 24H2.

Have you tried updating through the catalog to the December update?

Need to download both files and install in this order.
