Solved cant connect to Mysql server as target machine (localhost) actively refuses it

no, just tried turning off windows firewall and it still wont connect

Are you certain MySQL server is running and there's only one instance of it? What are the server configurations saying?

That error message can be very misleading.

I fix.
Had to create a user and password in the Mysql engine. You can find in the mysql bin directory executable tools.
I used mysqladmin.exe and it told me to create a user and password.
Also ran mysqlld.exe and that created some firewall rules

And there is a visible gui using winmysqladmin.
This is a older 3.2 version of mysql database

Some many years ago, I had written a mysql vb6 program for library data and wanted to view it again

Have you enabled / installed OBDC connectors to access the MySQL server.

Does the MySQL server allow remote connections. It's possible it might only allow localhost connections or specific IP addresses.

Another way to test is to install HEDISQL on windows and try and connect.

Ta!!!

However other users might like the HEIDISQL stuff. !!

Probably too much of "The Amber Nectar" this afternoon --if I need Winter weather then crisp snow in nice sunlight is always better. !!! When it's grey (although sunny today) and around -1 deg C with grey skies and wet and slushy then we always call it "Swedish Suicide Weather" !!!.
