Hang on, icofx isn't changing the executable by right clicking on the program desktop icon.

I realize you mentioned using icofx but that's not what I based any of my tests on. I based my test on your first mention above..
The outcome here is to wherever possible, not have to load more crap on a PC.
Granted, I know the icofx program, there is nothing wrong with it as there is nothing wrong with Resource Hacker.

Hi there
I'll fire up a Windows VM and have another go -- will post later !

I usually test stuff before posting or at least if quoting from another source usually attempt to verify before passing the link.

What you CAN use is say any existing .exe or.dll program in Windows that has icons in it e.g look at Windows tools for example :

So the trick is to find an existing windows program / .dll that already contains an icon you want to use -- so 100% Windows without any extra stuff required.

Read my last post, may of posted at the same time, Jim.
I based my failings using the first method you mentioned, not icofx

Changing the shortcut icon does not change the Systray icon, in most cases.

You're right, it needs to be a prominent image.

Seems to work OK here : I selected an Icon from C:\windows\system32\imageres.dll and and when you run foobar it shows on the bottom taskbar with the new icon.

I haven't tested it from the Windows start screen since I rarely use that - I still prefer desktop icons for launching programs.

to modify the systray icon, you have to recompile the entire exe... majority of the time. resource hacker, nor any other tools ive tried have been able to do this

Maybe for apps that don’t have the setting but the app the thread is about does.
