So, I successfully downloaded the Windows 11 iso to a file on my desktop. I entered the command prompt commands, and attached is a screenshot of the messages I received. I then turned off bitlocker and did the clean boot and reinstalled Windows 11 Pro from the iso file. I went through the introductory screens and everything looked good. I then ran a new V2 log collector. The zipped file is attached.

I will do that shortly, but my computer froze again about five minutes ago (at 6:48 PM CDT) and required a hard shutdown with the power switch. I will send along another V2 Log as well. Something I haven't mentioned - I have been at a hotel for the last four days, and my WiFi connection has frequently dropped out, requiring me to reconnect. I didn't think much about it, blaming the hotel WiFi. Also, since my total freezes began several weeks ago, I didn't make a connection. However, I have been using a LinkSys USB WiFi adaptor today, and have had no WiFi dropouts. Could all of my problems be related to the internal WiFi module in my laptop ?

Visit manufacturer support site and download latest WiFi drivers. See if they make any difference.

1) Run Sea Tools Long generic test (all drives) > post images or share links

2) Run HD Tune (run an old version so that it produces results for the whole drive)
a) Health
b) Full error scan

3) Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste:

chkdsk /b /v

Run these chkdsk switches on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /b /v C: or chkdsk /b /v D: or chkdsk /b /v E: etc.

Make sure that the windows drive runs overnight while sleeping.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /b /v
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Type: Y

Reboot as needed.

Make sure that this runs only after the prior three steps for each drive.

4) Run HD Sentinel (all drives) > post images or share links (do not run until posting results for each steps 1, 2, and 3)
a) Overview
b) Temperature
c) SMART

z book - it seems that we are not making much progress. I do use veracrypt, and have for years on all of my computers. When that is opened, a new drive letter appears while it is open. The freezes have never occurred while veracrypt is open. When I get home, I'm going to go back and reinstall Windows 11 from the iso after uninstalling all other programs, then go to ASUS to get new drivers, then use Update to add additional files as recommended. I'll then make a restore point, run the analytical programsm and then add back my programs slowly, and see if a freeze occurs. I will re-post here when I have done this. Thanks again for your patience. Mark

Please make free or backup images and save to another disk drive or the cloud.

(Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Hasleo, Macrium, Paragon, etc.)

If possible decrypt the drive(s) then monitor for one week > report hangs / freezes / BSOD / unexpected shutdowns and restarts, etc.

Then perform trial and error steps.

For example clean install Windows 10 o11 or Ubuntu / Linux.

Whatever operating system is installed please perform drive tests.

There are multiple types of drive tests.

A drive can pass one test and fail another.

Make sure that each of these drive tests in post #27 are performed with the applicable software/ operating system.

After performing trial and error steps an image can be restored.

One more question - after making the backup image and adjusting the UEFI to load from a jump drive, can I safely wipe the entire C drive using the killdisk program and then recover from the USB ?

A backup image is to restore an image after troubleshooting has completed.

For example a backup image is created and saved to the cloud.

The computer user performs multiple trial and error steps.

When done > restores an image and is back where they were before the trial and error steps.

Zbook and others – so this story becomes even more interesting, and a partial diagnosis has emerged. Since my last post, I have not used the possibly faulty Windows 11 laptop hardly at all. I switched to using my three year-old Lenovo Windows 10 laptop instead. Nothing was transferred off the Windows 11 machine, and no new programs were installed on the older Windows 10 laptop. My main recent use for both of these computers is to view and sort large numbers of 50 MB .raf raw photo files that are contained in 150 GB folders. To do so, I am using the Windows PHOTO app to convert the .raf files, one by one, into viewable photos. The .raf files were previously put on the Windows 10 laptop directly from the original digital memory cards. Thus, no direct contact has occurred between the two laptops. Imagine my surprise when, working with the older Lenovo laptop, a complete freeze occurred, requiring a power button hard restart ! After the restart, I noticed that the older machine occasionally became slow at converting the .raf files to viewable photos. I immediately went to the task manager, and the CPU usage was as high as 90%, and then dropped back to normal. From this information, I think I am convinced that 1) there is no problem with the new ASUS machine hardware, 2) the Windows operating system is not the problem, and 3) it is highly unlikely that any kind of malware is the problem. I can’t explain why the total freezes on the new ASUS occurred at apparently random times, even when not working with the photo files or while on the Internet, and I do not know how to keep this glitch from happening in the future. It seems that a CPU overload is the source of the problem, or perhaps a heat-related problem. I will install a CPU temperature monitoring program to see what that shows. Any other ideas ?

Thanks, dacrone. It looks like this is an older program, and there is no advertisement stating that it works with Windows 11. Do you have personal experience with it and Windows 11 ?

i dont, sorry. but upon further research its common that the photos app renders .raf incorrectly and that causes hangs/freezes in explorer. since fastpictureviewer is just a codec pack, you could try a different viewer. you can enable the classic windows photo viewer or use one of many alternatives discussed here. im sure @Edwin would know more than most about the photo apps that are best to use

Thanks Edwin. I have installed Irfanview64, and it seems to work well. If I have any further problems, I'll try FastStone. I have used FastStone capture for years to do screenshots and have donated to them because their app works so well. I didn't know that they had a photo viewer.
