my experience,

1. same specs, fiber ISP runs higher speed. If the specs says 300. fiber can go 320, while cable may be 280.
2. fiber ISP. down/up load speeds are similar/even. no big difference. but cable ISP can download 280, upload 20-25. i.e. significant difference.

Interesting - so the one I was talking about is full fibre but the upload speeds are significantly less than the download speeds. 300/30 or 500/50

my full fibre is 1GB down and 1GB up ..

So this makes me wonder if ours is actually full fibre - if the upload speeds are so much less than the download speeds. Unless somehow the company restricts the upload speeds maybe?

Ok had another look on their website. Symmetrical upload and download is available - it's a pricing thing. The standard quote prices are 500 download 50 upload or 300 download 30 upload. You can have symmetrical upload and download - at an additional cost! Add-on package. £5 a month extra. Which doesn't sound that much but once the discount ends in two years it could make it quite expensive. Still, it would be nice to have!

I have 1Gbps which I got from a good deal several years ago and price have gone up since. It's an FTTH or FTTP. Me and my wife discussed about finding a cheaper alternative but we weighed the pros and cons. What we have right now is the fastest and biggest in Canada. Very reliable and the service never went down for the past 6 or 7 years until last week when I was recommended to have my modem replaced for free. Within an hour after I got the new modem, it's like nothing happened. So we decided to keep our ISP. After all, our life revolves around the internet these days... work, kids school, video streaming, getting in touch with people, forums like this, relaxing in front of the PC, etc. The cost is all worth it.

Some company will manipulate speeds to make more money.
My FTTP was from years ago and new at the time (that's why it was on a good promotional deal). They haven't come up of ways to make money out of speed manipulation at the time. At present, I usually get 950-ish down and 850-ish up using Ookla. But using the native speed tester of my ISP, it's always 1Gbps down and up. I figured Ookla is slower because it is web-based and goes through servers around the world.

I live in France, have fibre and get tested up and down speeds close to 400 Mb/s with an 11 ping.
When uploading an Acronis image of 80 Gigs to Onedrive the speed oscillates between 2 an 30 MB/s, 16 and 240 Mb/s every say 3 secs.
If at the same time, I take a look with the Ookla speedtest in my Firefox browser there is still 200 Mb of the 400 left.
So my ISP is willing but Onedrive doesn't take it.
The image is read from an SSD that can easily flood the connection.
Just for informaion.
