Deprecation of Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool and Troubleshooters

Microsoft is retiring the Windows legacy inbox Troubleshooters, such as Keyboard troubleshooter and Speech troubleshooter, and the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) that runs them. The legacy inbox Windows Troubleshooters are built-in tools that, when launched, automatically diagnose and correct common problems for a variety of Windows features. MSDT Troubleshooters will be deprecated in the next Windows 11 release, with the date to be determined.

The estimated deprecation timeline will take place over the next three years:
  • 2023 – Begin redirecting some of the troubleshooters to the new Get Help troubleshooting platform
  • 2024 – Complete the troubleshooter redirection and remove the rest of the troubleshooters
  • 2025 – Remove the MSDT platform
Note: To learn how the deprecation will impact your company, see Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) deprecation.

What does retiring the legacy inbox troubleshooters mean?

Many troubleshooters are built on the MSDT platform. Some of these troubleshooters will be redirected to Microsoft’s new platform called Get Help. The remaining troubleshooters will be removed.

Devices running the next release of Windows 11 and newer

The MSDT Troubleshooter deprecation, including redirection and removal of legacy inbox troubleshooters, will go into effect on devices running the next release of Windows 11. The next Windows 11 release date is still to be determined. We'll update this article when we have a release date. Check back later.

Access the Get Help troubleshooters from Windows Settings:
  • Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters and select the correct troubleshooter for your issue.

    Open Troubleshoot Settings

Devices running Windows 11 version 22H2 and older

If you're running Windows 11 version 22H2 and older, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 or any other earlier OS version, your device will not be affected by the MSDT Troubleshooter retirement. Earlier OS systems will continue to run the legacy inbox troubleshooters.
