I'm newish to Windows 11 so my photographic memories of Windows Update don't exist... but did Windows Update just get updated in the last couple days?

It seems to be behaving differently i.e. listing some updates before installing. If not, I'll detail out some questions.

I'm on release version & I have the option "get updates as soon as they are available" turned off. I neither want nor need any preview updates. Other than defender definitions I haven't received an update since update Tues. 4/8. If you have that option on, then KB5055627 preview update may have applied for you as it did bor @Berton.

Not sure if it's related to any update to Windows Update, but checking for updates (in UK) took ages - up to 10 mins. Hadn't checked for a couple of days. The same applied to checking for MS Store app updates. I'm assuming it's a server thing.

Thanks. Some Update related issues took me into some areas I've only cruised by before. I thought I found some differences in features.

But I'll keep hacking a bit (do my homework) and then add those or perhaps do a new thread with specific questions.

No, it didn’t. But “preview” updates were/are available for “Windows”

The behaviour of Windows Update depends on whether or not you turn on 'Get the latest updates as soon as they're available'. With it turned off the 'preview' non-security updates issued towards the end of the month are optional and listed separately. With it turned on they get downloaded and installed automatically like the monthly cumulative updates on Patch Tuesday (2nd Tuesday of each month).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

So this is part of my confusion.

To simplify, the ideal interface for me would be if Win 11 acted like Win 7: I click "Check for Updates" when I want to know if there are updates. Then I get a list of potential updates. I decide if I want to download and install them. Optional updates are segregated.

Question 1: Will Win 11 let me alter Security Updates processing? Or are they always " auto download and install ASAP, you get no choice.' ?

I do have the option "get the latest as soon as they are available" set to off.

I also now have the Group Policy of "7 Notify for Install; Notify for Restart" in Admin Templates > Windows Components> Windows Updates > Manage User Experience > Configure Automatic Updates . But I also see that there is this comment on just disabling that option: "If the status for this policy is set to Disabled, any updates that are available on Windows Update must be downloaded and installed manually. To do this, search for Windows Update using Start." I'm not sure if that's closer to what I want.

Question 2: Perhaps Option 7 is more of what I want?

My preferred option, which I set on all my Pro machines, is:

2 = Notify before downloading and installing any updates.​

When Windows finds updates that apply to this computer, users will be notified that updates are ready to be downloaded. After going to Windows Update, users can download and install any available updates.​

I went in to compare that to #7... and I realized 7 is only applicable to Servers. So now I'm on #2.

Does that notify you about Security Updates? Or are those still auto-install?
