I'm in the process of setting my my new computer and I have a problem with the Ethernet upload speed.

Running a speed test, my download speed is 900+ Mbps, my upload speed is 2 Mbps.

I disconnected the Ethernet connection and connected to WiFi and my download speed is 700+ Mbps, my upload speed is 35+ Mbps. These are the same speeds that are recorded on other computers on my network.

I connected the Ethernet cable to another computer and got normal speeds.

Therefore, I'm assuming that the Ethernet connection is at fault.

I ran the network and internet troubleshooters. It didn't find any problems.

I followed the instructions on the following link but that didn't work:

I reset the cable modem but that did nothing.

I removed and reinstalled the Ethernet driver but that didn't work.

I checked for a driver update but I have the latest driver.

I'm running Win 11 home with all updates

The Ethernet card is Killer E3100 2.5 Gigabit
The Ethernet driver version is 1125.13.424.2023

Is there anything else that I can try?

I know that.

If I use a WiFi connection, I get 35+ Mbps upload. I get the same upload speed on 3 other computers in the household. It's only on the new computer using Ethernet that I get a max of 2 Mbps upload.

This makes the internet connection sluggish.

Problem solved.

This doesn't make logical sense to me but here is the solution in case anyone else has this obscure problem.

I have:
-Dell XPS 8960
-Win 11 Home (up to date)
-Ethernet card is Killer E3100 2.5 Gigabit
-Ethernet driver version is 1125.13.424.2023

In short, my internet upload speed should have been about 35 Mbps. I had this speed while connected to WiFi (and all other computers on my network) but the speed was only 2 Mbps when connected to Ethernet.

In my shorthand, here is what I tried:
-reboot router and computer
-ran Window network troubleshooter
-ran Dell troubleshooter
-disconnected Ethernet, connected WiFi. I got 700+ Mbps down 35+ Mbs up
-connect Ethernet cable to another computer. I got 900+ Mbps down 35+Mbps up
-removed Ethernet adapter (from device manager) -rebooted to reinstall
-removed and reinstalled driver
-checked for updated driver (I have the latest driver)
-Win 11 is up to date

Nothing worked so I called Dell tech support and connected with a live technician.

It took a lengthy investigation but the tech ultimately disabled a number of Microsoft services that weren't necessary for normal operation. That fixed the problem.

I don't know which service was the problem and it doesn't make sense to me that it would have caused slow upload speed on ethernet but not WiFi. Regardless, it is fixed.

Further information regarding this problem and solution in case anyone else has the issue.

I won't bore you with all the detail but the slow upload problem returned and I managed to find the specific problem.

My motherboard has an Intel Killer E3100G 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
The drivers for this controller install a service called "Killer Network Services".
Killer Network Services was the cause of my slow upload (0.2 Mbps instead of 35 Mbps).
Disabling the service solved the problem.

The link above describes the service and says that it is not a necessary service.

Hi! I registered here just to thank you.

I had the exact same problem and your solution fixed it! Thank you. :)

I have the same adapter: Intel Killer E3100G 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Controller.

I tried a USB ethernet adapter and my upload was fine at 45 Mbps.

But on the Intel Killer E3100G 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Controller, it was only 0.8 Mbps.

Disabled Killer Network Services and now things are back to normal.

@dsscottage ,

@RoHe, one of the foremost Dell Forum gurus (Rockstar), has long advised killing the Killer Suite of services. I have all four disabled. You must watch, though, because Dell Killer (Intel) updates often turn them back on. Leave the Killer driver alone. That is needed.

There have been many reports of the Killer Suite causing connection issues. Reducing your speed to 2 Mbps is a rather extreme example of what it can do when it goes south.

I am glad you solved your problem. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

All the Internet I've had to work with had the Upload speed much slower than the Download speed, even the old Dial-up at max. of 53Kbps. I have Wireless DSL at 25Mbps and get within 1% of that for Download over 5G Wireless connection to my Router and between 6Mbps and 9Mbps Upload speed.

The upload speed on broadband Internet connection always lower than download speed, not much you can do.
Not true these days for those with full fibre connections.

Those still using older copper wired connections for any part of connection from home router to ISP service will probably find a ratio as much as 10:1 in some cases (upload 10X slower than download), Typical domestic optical fibre connections (those normally up to 10 Gbps) will have very little if any difference in up / download speeds. Faster connections -- commercial providers, data centres etc will definitely have no difference between download and upload speeds.

Full optical fibre has almost "Infinite" bandwidth -- if some ISP's are capping / charging amounts you can use per month then that is just pure unbridled corporate breed preying on the unfortunate tragic ignorance of the consumer.

cheers

The same thing that you use your Internet connection for: To browse the web, post to this forum, download files, watch YouTube videos, upload / download stuff to / from OneDrive, etc.

Don't misunderstand my statement as an indication that I NEED that speed. It's more that I WANT that speed :-)

Okay, joking aside, my roomie does a lot of data intensive remote IT work. He is actually the one who would benefit more from the bandwidth. For him, the extra bandwidth would actually be helpful. For me, not so much. I would simply benefit from his need by gaining bragging rights :-).

Just wanted to say Thank you!
I also have an XPS 8960 and had the same exact problem, your solution worked perfectly. This is my work PC so you saved me a bunch of time and money. Thank you so much!

Hey thanks, I have been trying to solve that problem without success until I came across this topic. You spared me the time wasted on Dell support phone line.
I have an XPS 8930 and a Killer E2400, so my specs are a bit older and my computer still runs on windows10.

However, when I killed the "Killer Network Services" in the task manager, my upload speed instantly came back to normal (about 900mbps)
But instead of uninstalling the whole Killer Performance Suite, I went onto the app and in the option I simply switched off "Killer Prioritization Engine". With this option disabled, my internet speed also came back to normal. I rebooted my computer and checked the speed again, it was all good!

So I would recommend giving that option a try before uninstalling the performance suite.
