file sharing on home network with windows 11

Which ones?

Denis

Primary one is creating local account. But also turn windows features on or off and lots of little things.

Local account:
Even MS instructions have it wrong. It's no longer in Family (which now REQUIRES MS Account) but Accounts >> Other users >> Add a user >> Add account. Then you click on no email information, etc.

It's disappointing when folks like you create good tutorials, only to have MS change the name or methodology to work on the feature.

So now I found a way to access my server and better control OneDrive, I no longer need the local account I created. It's no biggy to leave it but ........ Anyway, the instructions from this AI overview don't work for me (still refers to family) and the instructions from MS don't cover removing a Local Account.

So, what am I doing wrong that that I can't share a drive but only subfolders? I'm allowed to create the share but always get the now permissions prompt.

The tutorial seems, to me, to match where you found it.
Add Local Account - ElevenForumTutorials
I think you accidentally clicked on the TenForumsTutorial instead.

the instructions from MS don't cover removing a Local Account
Add or remove accounts on your PC - Microsoft Support
And, if you scroll down to the end of the Add Local Account - ElevenForumTutorials tutorial you'll see a section called Related tutorials and it includes Delete User Account in Windows 11
Personally, I always keep two spare, password-protected, Admin, local user accounts as insurance against user profile corruption [which, thankfully, is much less common than it used to be].
- I also use one of the spares for general troubleshooting
- I keep the other spare unused, pristine.
Create two spare local, password-protected Admin accounts [post #2] in Windows 10, 11 - TenForums

the instructions from this AI overview don't work for me
Forum tutorials have brains behind them.
Current online implementations of AI do not. The extract you posted refers to Windows but it only applies to Windows 10.

Perhaps considering its security properties might help resolve matters.
Did you set up any particular permissions when you fitted the drive?
In File explorer, right click on the drive then select Properties, Security tab, Advanced
Here is one of mine. I took ownership of the drive in order to give Full control to my day-to-day user account.
I'm on my Windows 10 computer at the moment but both OS are the same in this respect. They share a common tutorial - Change Permissions of Files, Folders, Drives, Registry Keys for Users and Groups in Windows 10-11 - TenForumsTutorials

Perhaps you could post your equivalent.

Welcome to ElevenForum.

It's really worth making time to browse through the ElevenForum Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every ElevenForum page [within the Tutorials dropdown list].
- At the foot of the ElevenForum Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
- I download a new copy each month.
- By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
- ElevenForum tutorials are also listed at Tutorials and there's a shortcut to that at the top of every page.

You can search ElevenForum using the search box in the top-right corner of all ElevenForum webpages or using Advanced Search - ElevenForum
- You can also search ElevenForum threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:elevenforum.com after your search term. For example,
Taskbar setup site:elevenforum.com
- [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of ElevenForum webpages does automatically]

For MSOffice problems search in and, if necessary, create threads in the TenForums MSOffice section [ElevenForum does not have one].

I can't see anything wrong with your security settings. As you say, they are the same as mine.

I have run out of ideas but, upon re-reading the thread, I wonder just what is on that problem dialog.
Please could you post a screenshot / photo of it.

Actually no, since I shared the folders and no longer have the problem. I'm reluctant to change anything.

However, this is the section of the post I made about 24H2 taking away my previously working shares.

1718726286231.png

Now I have passwords / pins for all my PC's, so even that issue is no more.
I appreciate your helping me get my system together.
Now of course MS is pushing me to update to 24H2, I think I'll wait a while before doing that again......
