as long as I recognise the name The actual name is not a major deciding factor for me. I think any of the top names will produce what you need. Of course I no longer build my own systems these days but I do use a Pro builder who will produce exactly what I specify to them The two in my specs were built to my specs and built to a purpose, unfortunately this does mean the devices can be classed as budget conscious purchases

I've never had a problem buying from Cash Converters' online shop. I've even had to return one under their 14-day returns policy. Not because there was anything wrong with it, but because it had been advertised as having an 8th gen processor and turned out to be 7th gen.

I’ve been fiddling about with it a bit and seem to have resolved the issue. It originally had W10 2004 and I left it on that, with all updates done as was returning it. Anyway reset it - and then thought - does it really matter which version of Windows 10 is on it - so upgraded to 21H1 - during which some firmware was updated - and it hasn’t overheated since. Running quite cool actually. It still gets a bit warm with a few windows open at once and I’ve stretched it a bit to test it out. And no warmer than most laptops now.
So I’m keeping it. But will get one of those laptop lap things anyway as the rear edges dig into my legs a bit - with the design of the screen sitting below the base.
Lol - I know you are anti eBay but I’m a big fan (and a very reputable seller on there). This is only the second time I’ve had an issue with something I’ve bought on there. I would only buy from sellers with very good reputation normally but it was very hard to find a used Surface Laptop 3 - and this seller was quite new. At least the warranty is genuine if I have any other issues.

Some Googling helped too. A few owners who only developed overheating issues after a particular Windows update. So thought it was probably resolved with a later update and updated to 21H2. Presumably the firmware update was part of it.
Anyway I’m happy with it now. And nice to type on. Still getting used to large mousepad (which I don’t need as still in the habit of clicking and scrolling). But it’s not as huge as the Spectre mousepad.
