We would place the machine on a tripod, set the 30 sec auto mode, press the button and rush to stand in front at the appropriate distance. With much older mechanical models there was a controller attached to the machine and we would press the button or squeeze the controller to take the photo when ready.

The only problem was that we could not see the photos before we develop them, unless using a Polaroid model.
