Future 'rug-pull' for unsupported Win 11 installs?

In theory stop of support means stop of security updates. As long as you have a frequently updated antivirus, you should not care about security updates. If Windows XP could run on modern hardware, you could find XP drivers for that hardware and you could run modern applications such as MS Edge, many people would still use Windows XP with an updated antivirus.

For comparison, there is a custom kernel for Windows 98 that once installed can run some Windows 2000 and Windows XP applications! I installed it on a virtual machine for testing and I was able to run Firefox 4.0, Office 2010 and others.

An enthusiast could similarly compile a custom kernel for Windows XP or later to let it run Windows 10 or 11 applications on a very old computer.

I prefer installing a modern operating system such as Windows 11 on old systems to extend their life. It is an economic way to upgrade your every day computing. Buying a new system is a last resort for the average home user due to cost.

The "average" windows user is not concerned with the release of a new operating system, they only change an OS when they change their hardware. Indeed a lot of users this coming holiday period will only know that Windows 11 even exists when they tun on their new laptop.

We here on this forum and all the other forums concerned with windows are a tiny proportion of Windows users, Microsoft will listen to our feedback as representative of a small but important part the Windows user base, but will also use other information that is more representative of their full potential user base

Buying a new laptop is rather expensive. An alternative is to buy a refurbished laptop for a fraction of the cost and comparable performance running Windows 10. You can then upgrade to Windows 11 if you want the newest operating system. A ref laptop upgraded with SSD is very cost effective.

There's not one thing wrong with using 10 for four more years. It's both solid and just as good as 11 in every way.

Yeah throw some rounded corners on every thing and boom there's 11 lol
Of course ms would have to screw up the start menu all apps function and also add show more on context menus to for good measure then it would be 11 :lmao:

Could be any extension to Win10 will depend on how many people are still using it come EOL in 2025, if like Win7 was, there is still a large number using 10, it may well get a stay of execution.

Windows 7 is still supported to this day with Extended Security Updates, but only if an organisation has paid an annual ESU fee, and then only until January 2023. Any attempt to download and install a standalone ESU update from the MS catalog will fail on a machine that's not enrolled in ESU.

A side effect of this ESU support is that all W7 PCs still get the monthly MSRT and definition updates for Microsoft Security Essentials, being the only updates not requiring ESU enrolment.

Don't forget, there are millions of everyday users who don't even know what OS they bare on, as chap said on here we are Barman58 said we are just a few users on here, also there are the millions of companies that won't change.

As said numerous times before, just install an antivirus, update it as frequently as possible and you should not worry about security updates anymore. It is that simple. The real deal breaker for me would be not to be able to run my everyday apps, like is the case with XP and Vista. As long as you can use the computer for your daily needs, I see no real reason to change operating system. Apart from the experience of course. An exception is gaming where you want Windows 11 in order to use DirectX 12 Ultimate on supported graphics cards. If you only game on standard DirectX 12 or earlier, Windows 10 meets your needs.

Doing at that way, I wouldn't be happy as there are a lot of other types of vulnerability that Av wouldn't find

We clearly have different views of MS!

I was one of the "idiots" who spent a LOT of money on an MS Zune -- only have have MS reneg o their promises and pull the plug on the device. They didn't care then about "bad press". I also had more than one Win7 PC "tricked" into updating to Win10, only to be trashed. They didn't care then about "bad press". I also had a PC kicked out of the Insider channel recently when MS decided to crack down on incompatible PCs. They didn't care then about "bad press".

So no, I don't think MS cares much about "bad press".

And, I don't think they will continue to allow "incompatible" PCs to continue to get Win11 updates until Win10 support ends; I think they will end this fairly soon.

But, these are only my views -- others will differ.

Any extension to the life of Windows 10 will be dependent on the business sector, a majority ran windows 7 for a while after the end of life some still run it, this is using the ESU and other workarounds, those that have left Windows 7 have skipped Windows 8 and gone to Windows 10. Four years of support for Windows 10 may not be sufficient for the forward planning periods used by businesses, especially after the last few years with the pandemic and the negative effect this had on Cashflow . I would expect that some extension would be provided but this would be only for business customers who would have to pay for the service, as with the Windows 7 ESU

We don’t have a crystal ball but my feeling is they won’t extend the end life of Windows 10. They will want everyone on Windows 11 by then. The extended support may be available like with W7 but for most people that isn’t something they’d know much about or want to pay for.

No updates on old hardware on 11 is a positive for many and a long awaited feature seeing updates fix one thing and break 3 other things lol

I've been using win-7 daily since 2009
No updates eol is a vacation not a bad thing and frankly I'm still waiting the the world to end as many still keep saying it will using win-7 I say bring it :lmao:

These but that's only the very basic, no updates to other things. went through it all a while back before leaving the company and doing the boss's personal pc and as far as I am concerned it's done it's day.

I think the opposite, as a lot of companies will stay on 10 for many years.... we shall see
