Installation and Upgrade Generic Product Keys to Install or Upgrade Windows 11 Editions

This tutorial will provide you with a list of RTM (retail) and KMS generic keys (default keys) for all editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Generic keys (aka: "default keys") for Windows 10/11 from Microsoft will allow you to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 10/11 edition you want, but will not activate it.

Using a generic key can be helpful if you wanted to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 10/11 edition for evaluation or testing on a PC or virtual machine, or just don't have a digital license or your genuine product key currently available and you will activate later when able.

If you do have a digital license linked to your Microsoft account for the specific Windows 10/11 edition associated to the PC you sign in to with the Microsoft account, Windows will automatically be activated by the digital license if the PC is connected to the Internet.

If you use a generic key, it will be registered with that generic code/ID (numbers, letters). Consequently, your digital license will be replaced by that generic code/ID. The only way you can keep the digital license is to revert to that license key. But, you will (obviously) also be reverted back to Home edition. I suggest you upgrade via a digital license key, and before you do so take a screenshot of your current digital key or write it down just to be safe. If you have Home you can use any valid Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8/8.1/10 Pro key to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro. It should also activate automatically if you have not reached the maximum number of activations. As a last resort you can call Microsoft and activate by phone. So proceed with the upgrade, don't hesitate.

An installed and running Windows OS will never read it again, not even if it finds itself running on new hardware. The only thing it will then check for is an existing Digital Entitlement for the PC's hardware ID on the MS activation servers.

Old post but I just ordered a new oem acer nitro 17 laptop 7840HS with 11 home and was wondering if shift+F10 oobe could be used to switch to pro and of course skip the compatibility checks so onedrive crap doesn't kick on ?

I was going to try and clone first but looks like it might be easiest to remove the existing m.2 os and just clean install on a new m.2
I already have a usb with 11 pro 22h2 on it made with rufus a week ago

But i need to export all the drivers with this.
Seems to be a bat file some where I forget where to export or import

If you check the command syntax you will see the path to export the drivers. Simply replace the path with the desired one, such C:\drivers or C:\users\usernane\desktop\folder to save on folder on your desktop. Replace username with your actual user.

If you have windows 11 home digitally activated, can you upgrade to pro using one of these keys and it will be activated? or is there another way to do that? i did it on my old laptop with w10 that was digitally activated also

You can use the generic key to upgrade to Pro but unless you already have a digital license for Windows 8/10/11 Pro for that computer it won't activate. You need a valid Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8/10/11 Pro key to activate the Pro version. However you can use it for some days without activating and then you can downgrade to Windows 11 Home which will be activated from your digital license.

Welcome to Eleven Forums.

If your PC already has a digital licence for 10/11 Pro (it's the same digital licence for both) then yes, changing the installed key to the generic Pro key will upgrade Home to Pro.

If you don't have a Pro digital licence, then when you try to change the installed key to Pro Windows will check online. If the PC doesn't have an existing Pro licence it will refuse to accept the key change.

If you change to the generic Pro key while offline then Home will upgrade to Pro, but when you go online it will not activate.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

It will accept the generic Pro key fine, but not activate if you don't have a digital license for Pro. You will have to use a valid Windows 7/8/10/11 Pro key to activate. You have to disconnect from then internet only if you downgrade from Pro to Home, otherwise it won't let you and fail with an error message.

My son has built a gaming PC which he originally installed Linux on but now wants to install Windows11 instead. I've looked online for where to buy a Windows licence and there seem to be loads of places selling product keys for less than £20 claiming they are genuine. Can this be true? Are there genuine licences to be had for a tenth of what they are listed for on the Microsoft Store?

The cheap keys that are sold online are usually genuine, but the way it's sold for cheap is it is usually a key for a company or organization that has multiple keys not in use or something similar to that. So while the key may be genuine, there is no guarantee it would not get revoked later.

Having said that, I have bought cheap windows keys multiple times and never once had an issue.

If you can easily afford it, it cannot hurt to go with microsoft to get the key, as you would get the box with install media and documentation and would ensure it would stay activated forever as you own that key and know that it came directly from microsoft.

Some will work, others are scams. If you want to take the risk, look for posts and recommendations for the more reliable sites from other members, such as in this thread: Windows 11 Key for $29.97

You only need a key to work once to get the PC a digital licence. I would change the installed key to the generic key as soon as that's done to minimise any potential risk from the key being revoked later.

Good to know, thanks. I have bought a pro key from that stack social in the past and it worked just fine.

The truth is I haven't tried to use a Windows 7/8 lately to activate, but it doesn't harm to try it if you have one before buying another one. I have successfully installed Windows 10 or 11 on old refurbished computers using the Windows 7 key on their sticker. Not sure if this still can be done, just try it and see. The original language and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) doesn't make any difference. For example a key for Windows 7 Professional 32-bit German can activate Windows 10/11 Pro 64-bit English or any other language.

I did at the time, by mid October MS had closed that final loophole.

This tutorial will provide you with a list of RTM (retail) and KMS generic keys (default keys) for all editions of Windows 11.

Generic keys (aka: "default keys") for Windows 11 from Microsoft will allow you to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 11 edition you want, but will not activate it.

Using a generic key can be helpful if you wanted to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 11 edition for evaluation or testing on a PC or virtual machine, or just don't have a digital license or your genuine product key currently available and you will activate later when able.

If you do have a digital license linked to your Microsoft account for the specific Windows 11 edition associated to the PC you sign in to with the Microsoft account, Windows will automatically be activated by the digital license if the PC is connected to the Internet.

Hello, hope you are doing fine. What will happen if I upgrade the windows 11 Pro license that is tied to my laptop, to Enterprise, with one of these keys? Will my system effectively upgrade, and will I then lose the personalization options of Windows 11?

So that would mean I lose my ability to alter the esthetics of my desktop? Or what is exactly the consequence of enterprise not being activated?
