How do Share Files Between Two Win 11 Computers -Same Network?

@hsehestedt, I think I may have fixed my problem although I'm not going to say until I test it for a few days. I went through the tutorial step by step again and when I finished I still couldn't access the mini pc. I even tried using \\computer name in the address bar in File Explorer. I noticed when I was in the Wi-Fi settings that my Comcast Wi-Fi was set to Private and the Cloudflare Warp was set to Public. I knew for sure that sharing for Public was turned off. I turned off Cloudflare Warp and this time when I tried to access the mini pc I just had to enter the password and the folder loaded. I didn't have to enter the username because it was already entered. If sharing is still working after a couple of days I might try turning on sharing for Public and restarting Cloudflare Warp

Apologies for the slow response. I've been ill the last couple days. I'm still not sure how active I'll be tomorrow et (Sunday), but I'm definitely on the mend.

As for the Private vs Public you want to make sure that ALL of you computers on the home network are set to Private. Again, this is true for any system on your internal home network.

Sorry to hear you have been feeling ill. I just went through a period of H**l with my sinus's. I think it was because of the poor air quality caused by the wild fires in Canada.

I do have all of my devices set to private. Because of my very limited knowledge of networking and the use of Cloudflare Warp, I went ahead and used Revo to uninstall it.

hsehestedt:

I discovered this thread while trying to set up a new Win 11 mini for my wife, a task that gets rid of the last win 10 machine. I followed your checklist. But, as has been my experience for years in home netwoking, I am not worthy. I don't have permission. I will NEVER be given permission.

When I encounter an input pop-up that asks for user name and password, I have no clue what those could be, having never been given an opportunity to input either in a network set up. Nothing I ever input matches what is completely unknown.

Currently, the mini file manager can see "Elaine" the partition I am trying to network, along with "Deskstone" and "Users" from the operating system on the home-built with the 4T data drive. I can connect with both of these folders and read txt files on the mini. I don't have permission to access Elaine. It doesn't ask for user name or password.

If I try to connect with "Pottery" the old machine still on the network, I get the user name/password input box and no access.

Will I ever escape using sneakernet?

Try using the user name and password of the device you are accessing. Using the guide I made a user with the same name and password on the computer with the shared folder as the user on the desktop I was trying to access from. If you read my post you know that trying to access a shared folder had me pulling my hair out. My problem turned out to be because I was running CloudFlair Warp.

Denis:
Being an old Naval Aviator, I love checklists. I followed yours slavishly through step 5, the rest of them didn't seem to concern me. I already had a local admin account with a common pw on two of the three computers, and when I put it on the third, Suddenly I was able to access the shared folder I wanted. Hooray!

Except. When I logged in on Elaine's new computer using her pw., I no longer had permission. Step 4 says: "... does not restrict which user accounts can access the network." Stone can access, Elaine cannot. Luck should have nothing to do with it.

Next ...

With today's updates, all 3 computers are using build 226121.1848.

This time I went through the entire checklist, making sure to log in to all accounts using the password.

All three machines have a "stone" admin account with the same password (Step 4) and all contain folders left over from a failed attempt to build a network many months ago. My data drive contains a newly shared folder of files from my wife's old Win 10 machine.

Logged-in to the common admin account, all shared folders are accessible including the new one - a real network.

When I log-in to my wife's (user not admin) account on the new mini, the folder newly shared last week is uniquely locked out.

pop-up
Network Error
Windows cannot access \\Danstone\Elaine
You do not have permission to access \\Danstone\Elaine. Contact admin etc.

Step 4 says the local admin account is supposed to authorize mutual network access, and apparently does for all but this most recently shared folder.

I don't know how to cancel a share once established, so I can't start over.

Right-click on the shared folder [on its own computer],

Advanced sharing,
Uncheck the checkbox Share this folder, OK.

I really do not know what is wrong with your network.

Pardon my jumping in here. I have not followed every single posting in this thread so if my suggestions have already been tried, my apologies.

I just have one suggestion:

Try starting with the simplest possible scenario like this to see if it works:

1) On the system where you want to create a share, create a brand new folder, one that you can simply delete when you are done testing and drop one or two files in there. A simple text document is good enough for testing.

2) Share that folder making sure of the following when you create that share:
A - Make sure that in Advanced sharing settings you have password protected sharing turned OFF under the All networks section.
B - Make sure that in File Explorer options you have the option turned ON to use the sharing wizard.
C - Share that folder and make sure to share it with EVERYONE.

3) Try connecting to that share. It should not matter what user name you are logged in with. You should be able to connect to that share without being asked for a username or password.

If even this doesn't work, then we have something else (other than just file sharing) going on. On the other hand, if this works, then we can be almost 100% sure that there is a problem with the procedure of setting up the share.

When done testing, you can simply delete that folder that you created.

Again, sorry for jumping in here and if you have already done this.

stonecherub,

The only difference between H's approach & mine is that he sets Password protected sharing off & I set it on.
There's no harm in trying it off, it's merely not what I do.

I followed your instructions to create a test folder where everybody could do everything.

Logged-in to the mini with admin privileges, I had access to it.

Logged in with wife's user privileges, "You do not have permission ..."

When I changed Password protection to ON for that new folder, I got the Request credentials input box on the mini but the credentials I had on my list were rejected.

Legacy shares, older than numerous updates to Win 11, constitute a network that recent shares aren't in and all shares look the same.

I gotta think about this.

Yeah, I kinda flip-flop on what I do with that setting.

I do have a roommate with whom I share data. Being able to create shares without having to create a local account on my PC for them is why I like to turn off password protected sharing on some of my systems.

The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

This gets stranger and stranger.

I decided to make a new common user account for all 3 machines, clicking "don't have a sign-in" and "not a Microsoft account." I was invited to provide a name, a password, and security questions on each machine. (Those are what the pop-up input boxes want!). The account on Danstone is admin but I left the account on mini as standard user. then the fun began.

From Potter (The mini), I could see all three shared folders - today's test folder, Elaine's data folder, and Users. I was able to access the test folder that was blocked this morning, but Elaine was still blocked for the new account. Users is part of the OS. When I changed the new account to admin, Elaine was still blocked.

Tomorrow, I'm going to remove ALL the shares on ALL the computers leaving only "Users" as a network. I think this is what microsoft intended when they created "Users." This is wierd!

As of Saturday:

I have not been able to create a Win 11 network that includes a standard user, despite hours of effort. All three computers run Windows 11 22H2 Build 22621.- 1848 for Pro and 1928 for Home. I even changed my workgroup name to be the same as my WiFi.

Following several suggestions, I twice created local administrator’s accounts on each machine with identical name and password. This was supposed to facilitate networking somehow but doesn’t. When I set up these accounts, I was never given an opportunity to set a pin, it always requests password.

When logged-in to this ADMIN account, I have a network and all shared folders are fully accessible.

But my wife’s Microsoft account (she wants to be a standard user, not an administrator) on her mini only has access to “Users.” Clicking any other folder icon draws an “access denied” pop-up. Changing her account to admin makes no difference.

I made her a new non Ms account, changed it to admin - LOCKED OUT!

I am at my wit's end.

I would not expect it to have the intended effect.

I'm sorry but I haven't got a clue what you are talking about.
You created the network name [SSID] not MS.

As of Sunday 9 July, the only reliable network I have are the two local accounts with the same name and password on all 3 machines. I built them because of what I have read that such common accounts facilitate network connections. An experiment changing one on the mini to a Standard user finds the network unaffected.

Neither my wife's MS account nor a local account made last night on the mini have access to Shared folders on the 4T drive (which is the whole point of this exercise).

Nothing in my previous posts has any bearing on the problem of today described here.
