@glasskuter I think you are mistaking a preview of next update with a developer or insider build, which is beta/alpha channel and it's not meant for the general public. The preview is a stable build meant for everybody which presumably is not installed automatically, but by no means is a developer build: "A tested, cumulative set of new updates that are packaged together".
The blame is on Microsoft using that confusing term "Preview", like saying that Windows 11 is a preview of a future Windows 10 update, like it's not meant for everybody.

We're nit-picking here. Technically the optional 22000.593 update is a Preview of the non-security updates that will be issued next Patch Tuesday. But it's offered to everyone, you don't have to be on the Insider Preview channel to get it.

- fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).
My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

In any case i've experienced in the past, with some previous updates, that defaults apps were reset without my consent, like resetting VLC for Photos & TV and picture viewers, etc.
Same this has been going on with default web browser, which can be reset at any time since it's not disclosed by Microsoft:

Feature Updates (ones that install a newer version and create a Windows.old) always do that, Cumulative Updates generally don't.

That's not exactly true. First Feature Updates of Windows 10 didn't do that, it started happening a couple of years ago because Microsoft wants to push Edge and other default apps. It's not technically necessary for Windows to reset default apps, unless they are constantly modifyng the registry structure and they just don't want to check for current settings.
Ideally for them you would make a clean install each time instead of updating.

You can install Insider builds without having to sign up for the Insider program. Just use UUPDump to download an ISO. I'm running the latest Dev build in a virtual machine and I have never signed up as an Insider, installed from a UUPDump ISO. And not being an Insider means that I can turn off sending the 'optional data' in Diagnostics & feedback without the Insider Program turning it back on.
