I don't understand this deal of subscription i just downloaded a Word 365 personal copy for $69US, and i store my files on my WD remote HDs. i have not seen anything about having to renew it every year.

But Hwalker isn’t interested, as stated. The issue is OneDrive removal.

Well if that is the deal he bought from Microsoft or who ever was forcing him to install the Word 365, he is stuck with using one drive.

This is what i bought from Microsoft online web. i get a TB of Cloud with buying it there is nothing about a subscription needed.

Not true. You can use Ofc365 Word and save to a local drive.

I do not know where you went to get it but its main webpage is quite clear about it being a monthly / annual subscription.
While you continue to pay, you can continue to use it. When you stop paying, it reverts to a file-viewer-only mode.

The link automatically redirects to your region so your currency & spelling is used whilst the text, as you can see, remains the same.

@Brink - I suggest you move posts #3 #5 #7 [this one] into a separate thread of their own in order to avoid Hwalker's thread being disrupted by this separate subject.
Added a little while later - I think it would be better to move them to My older Microsoft Word is not going to work on my new Windows 11 Computer. instead of creating a new thread.

Maybe in the UK that is the Microsoft deal but i downloaded the Word 365 and it did not take me to any monthly / annual subscription item.
I downloaded it paid $69 and that is what is showing on my credit card.

Word 365 is free to use online, you are paying only for the cloud storage and the optional offline version.

You think Microsoft is going to give you 1 terabyte of cloud storage for the rest of your life for $69? Of course it’s a subscription, if you don't pay in 12 months, it will default back to the standard allotment.

100% it's a subscription. That's what Office365 is, now called Microsoft 365.

It's $69 per year for 1 account, and $99 a year for 6 accounts. Each account gets 1TB of disk space. If you have any interest in using cloud storage, it's the cheapest option for year for that much space. And as a side benefit, you get to install the newest Office suite on an unlimited number of devices if you wish to do so.

As others have said, you can absolutely buy Office 365, install it locally and never save a single file to onedrive if you don't want to. There is no requirement to actually use OneDrive.

Simply open Settings > Accounts

Note that you can also go online and view your Microsoft account details including subscriptions.

Some very fine forum member suggested using Open Office or Libre Office, i remembered that on an older computer i once used Libre Office their word processor.
So i downloaded the Libre Office and installed it on my new computer.

I find it a lot simpler to use then Microsoft's 365 and it's free but you can make a donation and i don't find pop ups donning me to buy their program as others have with their trial offers.

I really like the concept of Libre Office and the way their program works, i will keep the Microsoft 365 till October of 2024 then cancel my subscription.

I really wish my old copy of Microsoft Word would have worked on the new computer running Windows 11, as it has on my other computers running Windows 10 but it just does not work right because of a conflict with Windows 11 i think.

The old Microsoft Word 1997 that was included with one of my older systems, really works so much better then the new 365 i don't understand how they managed to make it work so poorly in 365.

There are several programs similar to Microsoft Office. If have tried LibreOffice but like FreeOffice better because it is simpler to use. FreeOffice comes with TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentations which are comparable to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Note both LibreOffice and FreeOffice can read/write the current Microsoft Office file formats. They both also can switch between the menu (Office 2003 and earlier) and ribbon (Office 2007 and later) interfaces.

BTW, I have a bunch of old computers. One has Office Pro Plus 2021 while two have Office Pro Plus 2019. I also have computers with Office Pro 2003, Office Pro 2007 and Office Pro 2010. I have copies of Office 95, 97 and Office Student and Teacher 2003 but am not currently using them. I have a couple computers with FreeOffice 2021.

Microsoft office is office. There isn't a different 365 version. I guess I haven't found new versions of office difficult to use.

I downloaded Open Office the trial copy and every time i started to write in a document, a large pop up opened up right in the middle of the page, asking be to buy it.
Now that really turned me off so i just quickly uninstalled the program.

Well having to set the letter size over and over and the stupid way that you do it, and having those long menus that ask if you need more options, the copy and paste should be together.

And i hate how it sends your saved files on the drives, if you have used the old word you quickly start disliking word 365.

Now if it works for you that is all that is important "right"
