If an app installs and on W10, any reason to believe it will not install and run on W11?

Hi :)

I have v5 of an application, the last build of which was in 2011. It runs fine on W7 of course, but W10 is not officially supported. I was able to install on my W10 laptop, and it runs flawlessly.

I know that there are some applications which installed on W7, which can not be installed on W10.

Is there any reason for me to be concerned with installing this application on W11, if it installs on W10?

Since it works in 10 there's no reason to think it will not run in 11. But the best option is to install it and test it out

I have some apps dating back more than a decade before that. They install and run in W11, just as they did in W10.

I don't think so, I have yet to find any app that if it runs in W10 can't run equally well in W11.

The backup utility I use, Acronis True Image 2021, installs a driver (?) that prevents core isolation from being turned on. That applies to both Windows 10 and 11. Some other drivers do the same. (I got rid of the driver. I forget which TI feature that breaks, but it's not one that I use.)

I don't think that core isolation is a hard requirement for 11, though.

So, I'd qualify the advice: I expect that software that works under windows 10 with all device security features enabled should be OK under 11.

Some softwares can run on windows 10 and 11 because Windows 11 (Insider preview) is an WinNT 10. But some software may break or not run.

There is a lot of confusion over the use of the word Support, a developer may decide to only support an application for a set period, or for just a specific OS, the reasons for this vary , often it's just because they have a replacement for this software that matches the new OS Look

Just because a particular piece of software is not supported does not mean that it will not still work It only means that if it does not work on your system, you have to fix the issues yourself

Microsoft tries to include code to allow software designed to run with older OS but it's actually accepted that the responsibility is with the developer to make their software work with windows.

If the developer ends support it will likely still work for the Next OS release, but as subsequent OS releases are release this likelihood is reduced. this depends on what the software does, If it interacts with the low level components of the OS there is less likelihood of it working.

Windows 11 Is very similar to Windows 10 but there have been modifications to the OS Kernel so it's best to try your software on a copy of Windows 11 before you decide to switch permanently - there are methods available to test these things - Virtual Machines Dual Booting Etc that are explained on this site.

I'm running Paint Shop Pro 7.04, released in 2001, on Windows 11.
Also running Microsoft Links 2003 (golf) on Windows 11.








Yes, I know her name is spelled incorrectly. The game comes with an Annika character, but I wanted to custom make one.
It wouldn't let me spell Annika correctly, cause there already was a character with that name.

I'll see Ghot's PSP 7.04 (which I also use) and raise that with Microsoft Autoroute 2000. I think the oldest software I still use regularly is Microsoft GIF Animator 1.0 from 1996. All run well in W11.

I assume those are 32 bit applications - hopefully Microsoft will keep supporting them in the next version - Win12? Got to keep the streak alive

Yes, all are 32-bit apps running on 64-bit W11.

There was one 16-bit app I had been using as my address book since I first found it in Window 3.1 - Cardfile. I would copy my address book and cardfile.exe across to each new PC and OS. I though I'd have to stop using it when I got Win7 as my first 64-bit OS. Then I found that a 32-bit version was supplied with NT 3.51 (and still runs in W11)

I remember cardfie from 3.1, and I also have happy memories of NT 3.51 - Damn I feel old all of a sudden

Links 2003 is a pretty good game, when you just want to relax at the computer.
Sometimes I keep Win 10 and Win 11 forums open, and play golf on the other half of screen. :)


Note: Things I put on Dropbox have a readme. Read it.
For example, Links 2003 has a couple patches, so the game will run on modern hardware.
Included, ofc. <---- the patches, not the modern hardware.


I mean just look at the grfx. Sand traps so sexy, you almost "want" to land in them.
