Sure. You can also get free backups, e.g. Veeam, Hasleo for FREE, run both of them if you are worried about reliability. Or the FREE Macrium v8 still works on Windows 11 just fine or a lifetime v8.1 license. To each his own, but the incremental improvements in X don't justify $30/year for me.

If you don't renew the subscription at the end of the year then Reflect reverts to a 'Restore Only' version. You can restore all your existing backups, but not make any new ones.

I use Macrium Reflect free. I often extract selected files from the image. Are there any in the list of programs mentioned above where this possible?

Hasleo can do that. Rather than Macrium's solution of mounting the image as a drive so you can use file explorer it has its own image explorer built in.

I'm tempted to upgrade my desktop PC used for critical work for that price. The BF offer works out about the same price to buy a new licence compared to upgrading an existing v8 licence. I'll keep my laptops on v8 for now. Is that BF discount on the annual plan just for one year or in perpetuity until cancelled?

Why switch at all, just because something is no longer developed it doesnt mean it will stop working, especially a backup program.

The only thing that will break Macrium 8.x is if Microsoft do some kind of major change to the file system or structure of Windows partitions.

Most people said they will move to something else, but is no need, just keep using 8.x.

I paid $40 for my perpetual 4 licenses.
If we assume a life of 3 years for X, I would expect an annual cost of no more than $15 for 4 licences.
Sorry greed has kicked in, every time I see a company go subscription model, they never convert to a reasonable fee but instead just convert perpetual to 1 year on pricing.

I will keep on using 8.x until it breaks instead which will probably be for quite a while as Microsoft dont like making major changes to their file system.

Except when it is only needed for a very limited period e..g. a holiday apartment for a couple of weeks or a moped for the few weeks in Spain, renting is not usually good for the punter.

The software companies like renting out stuff because the right of distribution does not pass to the punter unless it is a sale.

I just tried Hasleo Beta 5 - 1.

It took 2 mins 30 seconds to backup my C drive plus hidden partitions.

Macrium Reflect VX does same in 40 seconds.

Macrium V8.1 takes around 55 seconds.

Aoemi Backupper takes around 90 seconds.

I see no reason to move from V8.1 if one is unwilling to pay for lease fee until as such time V8.1 breaks.

One other thing about backup and restoration speeds. As I said, I don't time them as I have no interest in speeds unless for some reason it was taking an unusually long time.

But internal SSD to SSD backups and restorations are all lightning fast, no matter what system image application I use.

MiniTool Partition Wizard is a great partitioning utility. One of the best. I've never had problems with it.
Partitioning utilities are handy to have, but they're not utilities that people use every day, so they often sit idle until they're needed.

It is not just about speed - there are other factors too.

With Macrium Reflect VX, I get fastest speed, reliability & flexibility.
With Macrium Reflect V8.1, I get still good speeds (faster than alternatives on all my tests), reliability & flexibility.

Basically, none of the other 3rd party tools I have tested (and I have tested most of the main tools) are as good as Macrium Reflect - end of story!

Cost matters to people too -- Mercedes Benz or Honda Civic --- OK Mercedes far nicer vehicle with all sorts of features in it etc -- but financial needs might require person to get the Honda over the Mercedes.

Macrium appears these days just to be gettiing too pricey for what some people actually need -- and with decent cheap HUGE (16 TB etc) old but reliable 7200 RPM spinners with decent cache (now around €150 on Amazon (Black Friday deals) who is worried about compression etc. Plenty of space to store backups / multi-media, file sharing data etc etc.

You don't need mega fast disks for this type of usage and you can run backups overnight etc. So long as you keep OS small on SSD / NVME together with scratch work areas for things like photoshop / video / audio editing just use some old spinners in decent USBC external bays. The 2 Bay RSHTECH ones are great (32 TB == 2X 16 TB HDD's without any issue at all even if connected to a laptop.

This one (stand alone GUI) though works well enough for Disk cloning /data backupetc : and Free !! works with Linux and Windows file systems =-- although I haven't tested it with RAID

If you read my posts properly, you would see I said V8.1 is still better than paying a lease if you do not wish to.

This post was predominantly aimed at people who use Macrium Reflect but would not switch to VX.

I rather object to people saying speed is not important - if that was true, everybody would drive much less powerful cars, using your (rather obfuscating) car analogy.

Sure, for many, Image backup speed may not be important.

For me it is - I do not have to justify to anybody why that is - it's my personal preference.
