It's in my Downloads folder, the same as the one that does install. All my downloaded programs are there. The installer creates a folder in my Local/Temp folder which is on C: not D:

Yes at the weekend when I have more time I'll try and completely uninstall using Revo, then see what happens.
System Restore shouldn't be an issue if it's off? It's not on when I install the working Vbox version either.

I originally installed VBox at the end of June, on a clean install of Windows 11 22621. This was version 6.35.152011. This was obviously a completely new install including Vbox drivers. 6.35.152223 was installed on July 14th, this was a straight upgrade from the previous version and worked without problems.

All versions since then have failed to install. Maybe it is because it's a major build revision, I'll try and completely uninstall and post back here with the results. 152223 will always reinstall after the new version fails.

Appreciate the help so far!

I used Revo to uninstall VBox. After the uninstaller ran Revo found no additional items, which is strange as normally there would be registry keys left.

Restarted PC. New version wouldn't install again. 6.1.35 re-installed without problems as before.

Already have, this one won't work either. I used this one after completely uninstalling Vbox and restarting the PC. I would use their forum but you have to register as a business to use it, they assume consumers don't need VBox. I'm not registering with my job title and company name just to use a forum!

You don't have to be a 'business user' to register with Oracle to use the user forum. If the registration process 'insists' on a business title or occupation just use 'N/A'.

Fair point but they still require a valid phone number, can't use n/a for that

O.K. Can't remember what I put, but I have never been contacted by any method.

Will watch for any relevant reports of similar installation problems.

There is one process for uninstall/reinstall which has reportedly worked for many users who have had problems with repeated failed attempts to install on Windows systems:

1. Uninstall Virtualbox normally and Reboot;
2. Go to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers", look for any files named 'Vbox*.sys' (there could be up to 5) and delete them.
3. Reboot again.
4. If you have any 3rd-Party security or anti-malware software installed, disable the living daylights out of it for a moment. This is not necessary with the native Windows Defender.
5. Reinstall Virtualbox using right-click-Run-As-Administrator.

Update: Didn't work. There were 2 drivers left after uninstall/restart. I deleted them and restarted. New version wouldn't install, same error as before. Previous 6.1.35 version works fine.

Other user has reported the exact same issue with 6.1.37, looks like a compatibility problem between new Vbox drivers and Windows

6.1.36 from VBox site installs without error, so it's newer than 6.1.35. I guess Oracle will have to fix the driver issue.

You've been very helpful!

The findings reported by iko22 are consistent with those reported in the Oracle VirtualBox Forum virtualbox.org • View topic - v6.1.37 Test Build 152627 - Fails to Install

This has also bee reported on the Public Bugtracker so, hopefully, the Development Team will pick up on it soon. The only thing that surprises me is that there have been very few 'me too's'

Yes I'm surprised such a major bug (ie can't install the software) doesn't have more posts. Hopefully Oracle will get on the case soon.

Please take a look at virtualbox.org • View topic - v6.1.37 Test Build 152627 - Fails to Install

Confirmation now received from the VirtualBox Development Team (Klaus) that this problem arises for users of Win10 and later because of the need to install a timestamp CA cert using either "the appropriate option" in the VirtualBox installer or manually. The manual installation procedure is described by the Volunteer user fth0 on page 1 (12th post) of the thread.

Haven't had time yet to test installation, but thought I'd get the link(s) and advice posted.

Will try this, I guess manually installing the certificate is safe from a security point of view?

Haven't got round to testing fully yet, but have looked at the manual installation method described by 'fth0' and all it describes is how to apply the necessary certificate files from the latest Test Build Guest Additions ISO prior to installation, so I can't see that it would pose any additional 'security risk'.

I haven't found what was meant by using "the appropriate option" in the VirtualBox installer, so still puzzling over what Klaus meant by that in his post. Most of my VirtualBox use (almost 10 years) has been for running Windows/Linux on macOS Hosts, so it feels a bit like breaking new ground with the Windows Host process!
