Aside from from signature updates which MS pushes as they become available throughout the day, Defender receives platform and engine updates each month automatically. No user interaction is required. Of course, at any time you may right-click on the tray icon to trigger signature updates manually.

As a Windows Pro user, you may choose to receive Beta platform and engine updates via GPO or by using powershell. You can get more info on all Defender intelligence updates at the link below.

Windows Defender consists of three components:
- Defender platform (engine and background services)
- Defender signatures
- Security Center (or SecHealthUI app)

Each of them can be downloaded separately from MS sources. Platform updates are provided once a month, Signatures are provided every day, and SecHealthUI is harder to track down.

If your goal is to block normal Windows Updates, but continue to receive Defender updates, the normal solution is to pause WU indefinitely.

There is no freeware to download Defender files. Because why? MS only guarantees Defender security when you allow it to do its own job.

For reference, here are the download links. But you're responsible for installing them.

Definitions:

SecHealthUI:

If you want direct downloads, steven4554 runs a Defender Platform thread on another site. Out of respect for Brink, I won't cross-post it but it's easy to Google.

The max or highest setting is Defender's most aggressive one. It blocks all unknown executables. Attack Surface Reduction (ASR) rules can be enabled individually as users wish. Choosing the Max setting in ConfigureDefender will enable all of the above. There is a log to check for blocked events. If you find that some of your needed applications are blocked you may add exclusions where applicable or disable the offending ASR rule if it doesn't allow exclusions. All of this can be accomplished through the CD app. For more info or questions about ConfigureDefender please see ConfigureDefender

BTW, just a reminder that you don't need to manually download and install any Defender updates as @Garlin suggests. You receive them automatically.

I don't think he understands if you pause WU, Defender updates keep coming but no other Updates are provided. Or that Defender is designed to be a continuous service.
