I'm trying to upgrade the 1tb ssd to a 2tb ssd on my Dell 5625 win 11pro, ver 23H2 laptop. When I use an usb external enclosure with the new ssd, it does not show up in file explorer on either usb port. These ports work fine if I use my usb mouse. Go to my desktop and it shows up there and I format it. Back to the laptop, it's not there. I get a Wavlink usb-c 20gps dual m.2 ssd enclosure with offline clone. Clone the original ssd to the new ssd and install it in the laptop and I get a0XC000000f code. Looking at the cause, it is beyond my skill set. I installed crucial's version of Acronis, but that program never starts when I try to open it. Any other ideas on cloning this new drive? Thanks.
Mark

Update. When I use my desktop, file explorer shows it. But when I try to look into it, a bitlocker message box appears wanting an unlock code. I went into my MS account and I have no bitlocker codes assigned to it.

Strangely, I have in the past run into the problem of my PC not being able to see a new drive over USB before it has been initialized. I have had to format the drive in the PC and THEN put it into the USB case before it would be recognized. I have not tried to do a new USB drive under Win 11, so that limitation may have stopped, but that's how I had to do it under Win 10.

EDIT: Ahh Bitlocker. That's a whole other can of worms that I know nothing about. Sorry I can't help more.

Seems the more I play with this, the further behind I get. So, I installed the new 2tb hard drive into a usb enclosure and did a long format on another win11 desktop. But when I go into its properties, it is only shows a capacity of 935gb, not 2tb. Plus when I try to access it on the laptop I want to update, it does not show up at all in file explorer? Am I not doing something correctly?

Q.
can you make a Linux live USB boot drive, such as Ubuntu. this will run Linux from the USB and will not install anything to the computer.
this way you can use the live Linux USB to bypass any restrictions to check and format the new drive.

best of luck, Steve ..

I pulled the specs for your laptop. Is the new drive you purchased a 2230 or 2280 m.2?
If it is a 2230 form that laptop supports only up to 1tb. That would account for why you are seeing only 935gb available.
This is copied from your computer manual.

The Inspiron 16 5625 supports one of the following storage configurations:
  • One M.2 2230 solid-state drive
  • One M.2 2280 solid-state drive
The primary drive of your Inspiron 16 5625 varies with the storage configuration. For computers with a M.2 drive, the M.2 drive is the primary drive.

To add, the Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux LiveUSB drives I use [Mint, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu] include GPARTED [GNU Partition Editor], can wipe a drive back to fully empty and partition as desired using one of a variety of formats. No restriction on FAT32 partition size but still has the 4GB Single-file size limit.

The original drive is a 1tb drive is a 2230, the new 2tb drive is a 2280. It is a Crucial P3 plus PCie 4.0 nvme m.2 ssd, CT2000P3PSSD8. If I plug it into my win10 desktop it also shows 1tb and a message box saying "nfts support not enabled". Did I buy the wrong ssd? And why would it not show up in file explorer on the laptop, but does on 2 different desktops each showing 1tb and not 2tb?

Thanks. I'm running this now and see what happens. Would the ssd now show up as 2tb and not 1tb?
It may depend upon the BIOS as to seeing the proper size.

Finally, success.......sort of. I tried computer management/disk management. Let it do its thing and copied the original hard drive to the new ssd. I now have 2tb showing up in file explorer. I have OS (C:) and new volume (E:) each at 1 tb. I don't know how I managed to do it. My next question is: is there a way to merge (E:) into (C:) to make (C:) the whole 2tb? Thanks again.
Mark

Most applications clone the original disk 1:1, so since the disk was 1TB, you get 1TB partition and the rest space is unallocated. You can then expand the 1TB partition to take all the unallocated space. Other applications expand the partition automatically after cloning. To expand the partition search for Disk Manager and open it. Right-click on the Windows partition and select expand. Follow instructions on screen.
