Highlights​

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5026446 (released May 24, 2023). When you install this KB:
  • This update addresses a known issue that affects 32-bit apps that are large address aware and use the CopyFile API. You might have issues when you save, copy, or attach files. If you use some commercial or enterprise security software that uses extended file attributes, this issue will likely affect you. For Microsoft Office apps, this issue only affects the 32-bit versions. You might receive the error, "Document not saved."
  • This update addresses a compatibility issue. The issue occurs because of unsupported use of the registry.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Windows Kernel. This issue is related to CVE-2023-32019. To learn more, see KB5028407.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.1771​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.

Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.		If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Got the updates slipstreamed into my Windows images. Now I just need to do the same for Windows 10 :-).

I see that they integrated some fixes for the Windows RE security issue into the Safe OS Dynamic Update so I'll need to do some testing with that.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I used the reg file that is supposed to change the reg to show sec, it installed, checked the reg to make sure that the number showed 1, it does, restarted, no sec, shut down and reboot, still no sec. So I'm not sure if its this update or what is keeping the sec from showing even though the registry file is set to 1.

You need to install Windows configuration update. Then you will have sec.

I've asked them on Twitter before. They said more CPU usage -> more power usage (on laptops).

Same here , for the first time Windows Update searched very slowly , i was about to reset WU but finally after 8-10 mins of waiting the updates showed up. but downloading the CU one was also slow .... i don't know what Microsoft its doing there xD

Windows Updates on both Windows 10 and 11 computers were very slow today. Checking for updates was also very slow.
KB5027231 wouldn't download at all until about 5 minutes ago.
I suspect Microsoft were having issues.

Time of day would undoubtedly play a part. I upgraded my two computers when the update first came available about 1:30 PM EDT USA. Both computers updated quickly with nothing out of the ordinary. I do have a fairly brisk Internet connection at 900Mbps.

For me, I received an error message in the event log about the Windows Update service being hung on a manual normal-type-of-restart. (not a forced hardware shutdown, the worst you can do with a Windows update)
Then Windows Update seemed to keep hanging after, until I rebooted the router.

I work around that by downloading the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and then just installing it manually.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I have some nine machines to update each Patch Tuesday. I set them all going on the dot at 10:00am PDT (6:00pm here in the UK) as soon as MS releases the patches. Four are on Windows 11, the other five are on Windows 10. Windows Update now seems to work substantially faster in W11 than it does in W10. This Tuesday all my W11 machines completed their updates before the first W10 one did. Even my slowest W11 machine with a 1st gen i5 and an HDD still managed to beat my fastest W10 machine with its SSD and a 4th gen i7.

This has not always been the case, I'm wondering if MS have recently made significant improvements in the service stack for W11?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

I think the patch makers, went to the box that says: "Ways to break Windows 11", and they didn't find any new ideas to use. So this patch was smaller. :cool:

So on the topic of updates, here is something I just don't understand:

If you go into Settings > Windows update > Advanced options > Delivery optimization, you will note that there is an option to allow downloads from devices on the local network. However, for some reason, I find that only a very small percentage of updates actually get served from other systems on my network. I wish that there was some way to tune this so that it would prefer local machines on the network.

Don't get me wrong, I have gigabit up and down to and from the Internet, so it's not that I have a slow connection, but I still wonder if it wouldn't be faster pulling stuff from a local source.
