Highlights​

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5026446 (released May 24, 2023). When you install this KB:
  • This update addresses a known issue that affects 32-bit apps that are large address aware and use the CopyFile API. You might have issues when you save, copy, or attach files. If you use some commercial or enterprise security software that uses extended file attributes, this issue will likely affect you. For Microsoft Office apps, this issue only affects the 32-bit versions. You might receive the error, "Document not saved."
  • This update addresses a compatibility issue. The issue occurs because of unsupported use of the registry.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Windows Kernel. This issue is related to CVE-2023-32019. To learn more, see KB5028407.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.1771​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.

Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.		If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Yep, yep. :-)
Since the day I installed Windows 10 (May 2020), and the day I installed Windows 11 (Oct. 2021), I've had to do exactly zero re-installs for either OS. And my systems function like the day they were born.
These are all full system backups...

If you keep the "used space" on your Windows drive... small (40GB or less), backups and restores only take 2-3 minutes.
Install large programs or games on a different drive.
This makes backup software a very useful tool. Before, then after any major changes, make a fresh backup.

I tried it. I didn't like it. :-)
I add notes to the backup name sometimes.
Like the Jun 13th backups would have been named this, if it weren't too long.

Jun 13 - 22621.1848 - FF - AIDA64 - Winaero

...because between Jun 8th and Jun 13th I updated Windows, Firefox, AIDA64 and Winaero Tweaker.
The Jun 8th backup was before the updates. The Jun 13th backup was after the updates.



Disable Macrium ImageID numbers...

Open the Registry editor (regedit.exe), and...
Go here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\macrium\reflect\Settings
And set: PrefixWithUniqueSetID ...to "0" (zero), then reboot.



I like descriptive names. Then if I have to do a restore, I know what recent updates, I'll be losing.
A while back I had a Firefox problem. Something changed which I didn't like.
So I restored 3-4 backups till I got back to where the problem hadn't yet occurred.
Made it a lot easier to troubleshoot.

It wasn't an obvious problem. It took me about 2 months to even realize I HAD the problem.

Keep an eye on the drive, it's possibly defective. For all I know, its SMART may under-report.

Just to add to what Ghot said. I run a system image backup after the monthly WU. This way, I can go back to a previous update if things go awry. I have two 1 TB drives ($50 each) each holding 3 system images and I alternate between the two drives, giving me 6 iterations to fall back on if necessary. Data backup is done to another 1 TB drive (old "C" drive from a prior system) and it holds 5 backups which are done each week after a scheduled full system AV scan. I have never had to restore a system image using W7, W10, and W11. Is it because I have the backup insurance, or am I just lucky? It's sort of like having spare parts for your power tools and never needing them.

I guarantee --the one time you don't have them you'll need them. Same with "Auto club" - or similar -- emergency breakdown services --I'll bet the one time you drive with out it your car will break down even if you haven't needed the breakdown service for years.

Just to be clear, your post says that you run a backup after the monthly WU.

The time to run it is before the update.

If the update does anything you don’t want it to do, you can then go back to your previous version without any issues that could be resolved in a future update.

I’m aware that you can merely uninstall some updates, but an image is still the best insurance. An uninstall may not get you completely back where you want to be.

Well, if you think about it, the latest system image I have is before the WU is done when WU is run. I run the next system image after the WU has no issues. I can still restore back before the last WU and I have the latest WU backed up. Remember, I have a total of six incremental backups between the two system image drives.
