IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the Western holidays and the upcoming new year, there won’t be a non-security preview release for the month of December 2024. There will be a monthly security release for December 2024. Normal monthly servicing for both security and non-security preview releases will resume in January 2025.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5046740 (released November 21, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB.   • This update makes miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality. No additional issues were documented for this release.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5049685)- 26100.2592​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5048667 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB

Method 2: Install each MSU file individually, in order

Download and install each MSU file individually either using DISM or Windows Update Standalone Installer in the following order:
  1. windows11.0-kb5043080-x64_953449672073f8fb99badb4cc6d5d7849b9c83e8.msu
  2. windows11.0-kb5048667-x64_d4ad0ca69de9a02bc356757581e0e0d6960c9f93.msu

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Well, it is a separate appendage by the looks of it. Depending on how far up or down the screen you are clicking it may be added at the top or the bottom of the menu.

Yes, I showed mine earlier top and bottom and the width is the same and with round corners.

Yes, but only after you have selected something, and then only the icons for the appropriate actions for that selected item. In jhawk55's screenshot nothing has been selected yet, so all the icons are greyed out. For example, selecting a drive in This PC activates the Copy and Rename icons only.

In my new laptop got the 3 dots issue, scaled at 175%, but in my work notebook, scaled at 200% the 3 dots works fine. Besides that both notebooks works as expected.

My master volume went crazy again jumping up to 88 with a metalcore song playing. Fortunately I was able to hit the mute button then turn off the speakers until I could get it down to normal.

That has been reported several times to MS, but they are not listening.
The attempted fix they released only works with Scale of 100% or exact multiples like 200%, 300%.
Fails with all other scales like 125%, 150%, 175% etc. 😝🤬
This bug has been there for months in all 24H2 Builds.
The workaround is to disable feature id:51960011 which was another attempted fix for a different issue, but it actually added this 3 dots menu bug.
It is now enabled in the image default of all 24H2 builds. 😵‍💫🤬
[51960011] (FileExplorerTabLineFix) There is no good explanation about what this was supposed to fix. 😂🤷‍♂️

    I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
Almost month, we don't see the new features of 26100.2454.

Does your 23H2 have the bug that erroneously shows 'end of service' in Windows Update?

If so, then an in-place repair upgrade will fix that bug and, as it did for me, may have the side effect of finally getting to see 24H2 being offered.

It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
