Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5046740 (released November 21, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB.   • This update makes miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality. No additional issues were documented for this release.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5049685)- 26100.2592​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5048667 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB

Method 2: Install each MSU file individually, in order

Download and install each MSU file individually either using DISM or Windows Update Standalone Installer in the following order:
  1. windows11.0-kb5043080-x64_953449672073f8fb99badb4cc6d5d7849b9c83e8.msu
  2. windows11.0-kb5048667-x64_d4ad0ca69de9a02bc356757581e0e0d6960c9f93.msu

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Not really - the PRIMARY intent of the Insider Programme is to get feedback on new features, accepting the Insider versions were buggy.


It was never intended to primarily test for bugs as it seems have largely degenerated into.

The Insider Programme has lost its focus, particularly with so many confusing versions e.g. Beta on 23H2 when rest on 24H2.

I blame Amanda and Brandon for poor leadership, frankly even worse than Dona's leadership.

I installed this update and today I ran Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and it hung at 62.3%, started to download a huge file. I waited 1 hour than aborted with the power button as I could not find the hanging app in Task Manager processes. I rebooted, no issues, I ran Dism/online again, stuck again at 62.3%, waited 1 hour and got a message that DISM could not find the source file. Ran SFC scannow and that completed without issues. I restored the system to before this KB5048667 update but DISM/online hang again at 62.3%.
Update: 5:50 pm:
I then updated with KB5048667 and ran DISM/Online without issues, SFC also no issues, so the problem was with the KB5048667 update or with Storage Sense removing Windows Update files.
Edge was updated too, and I found out that you can no longer recover deleted favorites, in 23H2 up to 28 days deleted favorites could be recovered. I filed feedback as I frequently lose some favorites (URLs).

The bigger issue is Microsoft has lost focus and internally seems to be more confused with each version that's released.

Hey guys, as a follow up to my comprehensive list of issues here + Win7ine's addon post above, I can hereby confirm the following (tested and verified):

Dism /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase seems to fix and reclaim back the non-removable windows update cleanup storage (190 MB bug in this build). Unfortunately, as noted above, it fails to fix both /StartComponentCleanup and /analyzecomponentstore.
By the way the first time you run /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase it should go all the way up to 100% and you will think for a split second that all is finally good, but... yeah :sneaky: run it again and you will be back to our favorite:

Dism /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

Hello there,

I just did an update to 24H2 today. But when I looked into Secure boot - it is disabled.
I had a blue dead once after this new update 24H2.

Is that bug from Microsoft for AMD users? They will fix it in new patch or update? Should I do anything?

I don't pretend to understand whether there is any coupling between Windows and BIOS settings on UEFI PCs, but I normally think of Secure Boot as purely a BIOS thing.

It was disabled on my AMD machine, but that was due to a very recent BIOS update. Enabling it required some unintuitive fiddling with the BIOS settings. (Thanks very much, Gigabyte!)

Hi there,

Yes, I found some people reporting, new version of BIOS could reset the settings into secure boot off.

I turned it on and no more errors in event manager.

    It is a gaming PC.
So this update took 2 to 3 minutes when installing in the reboot stage, and around 10 minutes of first-stage installation. This is on a Dell Vostro 3520 with an NVME SSD, and it worked perfectly according to my limited testing (I have something important to do). The download stage surprised me a bit, because it got downloaded in around 3 minutes without the preparatory parts, totalling around 16 minutes.

Did you guys notice the change in the download stage?

Following the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected.

I tried to stop this update but no cigar, it got past me. So far Windows is working okay, even maybe faster. After reading the horror stories herein I was afraid to let it load. Am I to assume MS fixed their work?
