Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5046740 (released November 21, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • This update makes miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality. No additional issues were documented for this release.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5049685)- 26100.2592​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5048667 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

Method 2: Install each MSU file individually, in order

Download and install each MSU file individually either using DISM or Windows Update Standalone Installer in the following order:
  1. windows11.0-kb5043080-x64_953449672073f8fb99badb4cc6d5d7849b9c83e8.msu
  2. windows11.0-kb5048667-x64_d4ad0ca69de9a02bc356757581e0e0d6960c9f93.msu

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

The fix they released was only partial, it only worked with some display settings. Completely useless. 😝🤬

The bug was added with this other experimental fix, which is not even clear what it was supposed to do.

[51960011] (FileExplorerTabLineFix) it is enabled in the image default of all 24H2 builds. 😝🤣🤣
Disabling this ID 51960011 eliminates the bug. 👍

This was fixed today, but as been noted in this thread multiple times now, that fix is apparently not rolling out to everyone.

I have updated 7 systems so far plus performed one clean install. Of those, this issue is fixed in 6 of the 7 machines. So I have one machine on which the fix is not yet applied and it was also not working on the clean install.

Be patient! At least we know that the issue has now been addressed.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Yes. you can disabling this ID 51960011 to resolve this problem. but I hope Microsoft really fixed this issues.

What are the display settings in the 6 machines the seem to work? And which one is the fix you are referring to?
I have several machines, and it fails on all of them, unless I change the display settings. 😝🤷‍♂️
Nothing to do with the rollout, the fix they rolled out is just not working with all display settings.
Clearly the issue has not been addressed by MS. 🤣😝🤷‍♂️

I can reproduce the problem on any machine with 24H2 builds. 🤣

Been doing some thinking about why Microsoft would be gradually rolling out fixes and not just new features and this has resulted in me changing my mind about this.

Maybe, and this is just a theory, Microsoft has had an epiphany and finally realized what rubbish their updates have been lately and they have decided to roll out gradually to make those who get the updates guinea pigs for the rest of us.

So now, getting a bad update may more frequently become a matter of loosing the lottery and getting an update early.

I don't have to like it, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Microsoft has been implementing Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology on Window 11 for a long time. There are so many issues with Windows 11 24H2 that one feature might be enabled while causing another to be broken. The gradual rollout of these features may help investigate the cause of these corruptions.

It's been like that for more than 25 years. Many years ago, they used to reward testers. Now, not only no one is rewarded, but public builds are of poor quality and getting worse. Faithful users give their valuable time for free and get builds that are even more confusing.

This is not a case of controlled rollout, the fix that they rolled out only works with some display settings. It is just a bad fix. 😝
Here is the same machine with the same exact fix. Case A is OK while Case B fails and opens upwards. 😂😵‍💫🤷‍♂️
A) Has Display set for 3840 x 2160 and Scale of 100%. (Works also with Scale 200% or 300%)
B) Has Display set for 3840 x 2160 and Scale of 150%. (Same problem with Scale 125% or any % number not exact multiple of 100%)

Because you manually disable [51960011] Feature ID via ViVeTool. I don't use ViVeTool to change anything.

I have tested Display set and Scale at 3840 x 2160. it doesn't help.

And @hsehestedt has confirmed this point.

I did not disable 51960011, I'm waiting for a proper fix from MS.
This is still enabled on all my machines. 😎😂🤷‍♂️

Hm. There may be other associated feature IDs. Who know.

Maybe Microsoft has enabled certain IDs on your machine.

There is no change even if the display settings are changed.
