Insider KB5050094 Windows 11 Insider Release Preview build 26100.3025 (24H2) - Jan. 21

UPDATE 2/18:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we’re releasing Windows 11 Build 26100.3025 (KB5050094) to Insiders in the Release Preview Channel on Windows 11, version 24H2 (Build 26100).

Below is a summary of the new features and improvements included as part of this update separated into two sections: gradual rollout and normal rollout. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.

Gradual rollout

The following features and improvements might not be available to all users because they will roll out gradually. Text bolded in brackets indicate the area of the change being documented.
  • [Taskbar] New! This update improves the previews that show when your cursor hovers over apps on the taskbar. The update also improves their animations.
  • [Windows Studio Effects] New! An icon will appear in the system tray when you use an app that supports Windows Studio Effects. This only occurs on a device that has a neural processing unit (NPU). Select the icon to open the Studio Effects page in Quick Settings. To view the app that is using the camera, hover over the icon for a tooltip.

  • [Fonts] New! This update adds Simsun-ExtG, a new simplified Chinese font. It includes the Biangbiang noodles character. Some apps might not be able to display these new extension characters yet. The font has 9,753 ideographs that support Unicode Extensions G, H, and I. See the list below.
    • Unicode range G 30000-3134A (4,939 chars)
    • Unicode range H 31350-323AF (4,192 chars)
    • Unicode range I 2EBF0-2EE5D (622 chars)
  • [File Explorer]
    • New! You now have quick access to items that others have shared with you. Shared items include files, emails, Teams chats, and more. To view them, you must use a Microsoft account or a Microsoft Entra ID account to sign in to Windows. To view these shared items, go to the File Explorer Home page and choose the Shared tab. If you use a Microsoft Entra ID account to sign in, you have more viewing choices. You will see the files that you have shared with others. Also, the Recent, Favorites, and Shared sections of the page will show a broader set of file types.
    • New! When you right-click items in the left pane, the “New Folder” command appears on the context menu.
    • Fixed: After you do a search, that search might repeat when you don’t want it to.
    • Fixed: The date and time properties of a file might update after you copy it.
    • Fixed: Icons on the details pane might not update as you expect when you change a theme. This makes it hard to view the change when you switch between dark and light themes.
    • Fixed: The search box might lose input focus as you type.
  • [Mobile hotspot] New! The Windows Mobile Hotspot now supports 6 GHz connections. This new band requires chips that support the feature and updated drivers. The chips that support 6 GHz Wi-Fi might not support the 6 GHz mobile hotspot. To view this new band, go to Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot. In the Network properties section, select Edit. To work with existing devices, the mobile hotspot will only use 6 GHz when you enable it. UPDATE 1/23/25: Removed Windows Mobile Hotspot now supports 6 GHz connections – this change is not yet rolling out.

  • [Settings] New! You can change time zones in Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time. You don’t have to be an admin to make this change.

  • [Domains] Fixed: A device might fail to join a domain.
  • [Mouse]
    • Fixed: The mouse cursor might disappear. This occurs when you hover over text fields in certain applications.
    • Fixed: If you turn on pointer trails, the mouse cursor becomes transparent, and a black box appears behind it.
    • Fixed: The mouse cursor might stutter when it moves across the screen. This occurs even when the system is not using a lot of resources.
  • [Pinyin Input Method Editor (IME)] Fixed: When you switch app windows, the IME language might change from Chinese to English.
  • [Snipping Tool] Fixed: Snipping Tool screenshots might be distorted. This occurs when you use two or more monitors that have different display scaling.
  • [Task Manager] Fixed: It takes too long to close after you close the app.
  • [Microsoft Excel 2016] Fixed: When you open certain files, Excel opens, but the screen might remain on the loading screen.
  • [Dam.sys] Fixed: A watchdog timeout error might occur when your PC resumes from sleep.
  • [Windows update installation] Fixed: Cumulative updates might not install. The error code is 0x800736b3. This occurs after a feature on demand fails to install.

Normal rollout

This update includes the following features and improvements that are rolling out as part of this update. Text bolded in brackets indicates the area of the change being documented.
  • [Windows Backup] New! You will now have a standard Windows 11 taskbar after restoring from a backup via the Windows Setup experience (OOBE) on a new Windows PC. You can still find your apps in the Start menu and Search and pin apps you want to your taskbar. This change is not yet rolling out in the EEA (European Economic Area).
  • [High dynamic range (HDR)] Fixed: The display of some games appears oversaturated. This occurs when you use Auto HDR.
Thanks,
Windows Insider Program Team

I considered that, but am hoping there's a less invasive route.
Nothing invasive with that. 🤷‍♂️
Otherwise, you would need a location for the Source of the RestoreHealth.
That could be more complicated than a Repair install.

This error message means that your Windows system is trying to repair a corrupted file or feature, but it can't find the necessary files to do so; you need to manually specify the location of a Windows installation source, like a bootable USB or a mounted ISO image, to provide the missing files for the repair process.

What to do:
  • Mount a Windows Installation Media:
    • Download a Windows ISO file that matches your current Windows version.

    • Mount the ISO using your file explorer.

    • Note the drive letter assigned to the mounted ISO.
    • Open Command Prompt as administrator.

    • Run the following command, replacing "X" with the drive letter of your mounted ISO:

Code

dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:X:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

Key points about the error message:
  • "Source files could not be found":
Indicates that the system cannot locate the required files to perform the repair.
  • "Use the 'Source' option":
Tells you to add the /Source parameter to your DISM command to specify the location of the installation files.
  • "Configure a Windows Repair Source":
Provides a link to Microsoft documentation on how to set up a repair source for Windows.

I could just create an ISO of .3025 and point to it. That would be the easiest route for me.
I guess I was more curious why it needs that and couldn't just grab the packages from WU.

I have made several attempts to download the ISO for Windows 11 26100.3025 (24H2) from the UUDump site, carefully using the instructions.

The result each time is merely an 8KB file called 26100.3025_amd64_en-us_multi_8cb661e7_convert.zip. The zip contains a number of tiny files.

What am I doing wrong?

Unzip the file to a suitable folder location.
Double click the "uup_download_windows.cmd" file in that folder
Click "more info" in the Windows protection window that opens
and click "run anyway"
A command prompt window should open - choose the "Run once" option and watch the files download.........

Hello, today I installed Windows 11 with update 26100.3025, unfortunately there are still no pinned applications in the start menu, there are only 3 as you can see, I don't know what's going on, is it my computer's fault or is it Windows' fault, and in your opinion, what could it be?

I considered that, but am hoping there's a less invasive route.
Woooo boy! You CAN fix this without a restore. The bad news? It's a bit technical. First you will need to create an ISO via UUP of 10.0.26100.3025.

I would suggest creating one via UUP that JUST has the single image of HOME or PRO. Whichever you use. It'll make what's to come a bit easier. (see below)

chose one.

1737645240563.webp

Also don't use "ESD compression" when creating it.

1737645319565.webp

Now that you have your ISO you need to mount it by double clicking on the ISO

1737645778374.webp

This will tell windows to create a virtual drive and mount the ISO as if you just put in a USB drive like so

1737645889122.webp

Now you are ready to use the following command to tell windows to run DISM RESTOREHEALTH from a specific path using a specific image. Open a elevated command prompt and type the following command:

The command (using the above example drive) is:

Code:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth /Source:WIM:<drive letter>:\sources\Install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Change the drive letter to the path that your mounted your ISO. In the example it is mounted to drive G so the command would be:

Code:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth /Source:WIM:G:\sources\Install.wim:1 /limitaccess

That's it! If you're able to follow all of that it WILL work. I've used this MANY times to correct this very situation.

If you need any help please DM me and I'll do my best, best of luck to you my friend!

It takes just as long to download UUP Dump, or more, than to download and install repair version. Don't you think? And it saves the un technical guy all the tecnacalities.

Actually this is why I always have a current ISO available. There are MANY paths to a solution my friend. I simply offered him one among them. I'm not saying this is the only solution. But in my past experience this has been the best for me. The command itself and the restore takes about 4 minutes to finish. About the same time a normal "restorehealth" takes.

Thank you for everyone for all the helpful suggestions.

I went the UUP/ISO/DISM route, as that's what felt more comfortable.
I am glad it worked! :-)

(see below)

chose one.

Also don't use "ESD compression" when creating it.

Now that you have your ISO you need to mount it by double clicking on the ISO

This will tell windows to create a virtual drive and mount the ISO as if you just put in a USB drive like so

Oh no! This wasn't for your particular problem my friend. That was for spectrumfox. But in your case a "in place" upgrade may work. Simply start the install from the ISO under windows and choose "keep personal files and apps." You will NOT lose any settings or programs. This simply overlays your existing installation of windows. Nothing else.

Hello, today I installed Windows 11 with update 26100.3025, unfortunately there are still no pinned applications in the start menu, there are only 3 as you can see, I don't know what's going on, is it my computer's fault or is it Windows' fault, and in your opinion, what could it be?
You could also try re-registering all the windows apps by issuing this command (copy/paste) from an administrator command prompt:

Code:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

You will see a ton of "red" error messages. This is ok. Just let it finish and then reboot.

Hello,

I'm having an RDP issue with 26100.3025, which didn't exist in 2894 and earlier. I've reproduced the problem on several different computers, and am hoping others can confirm it.

In a nutshell, I'm having problems reconnecting to disconnected RDP sessions, on computers running this release preview build. Sometimes the sessions will reconnect normally (quickly) and function normally, other times there will be a short (several seconds) pause of the remote's desktop background before the desktop will appear and function properly, and still others the session will get "stuck" on the remote's desktop background (no UI elements appear), or the UI elements will appear but can't be clicked/interacted with. Resizing the RDP window on the local, also does not resize properly on the remote.

These problems seem to occur, after the remote computer has been in a disconnected RDP state for a while (as in, overnight, but probably shorter), and the severity seems to differ based on how many programs are left running on the remote computer.

I have a couple of examples. One of these computers is running in Azure, with a static public IP exposed for RDP (source-address restricted, of course). When I'm not able to reconnect to the disconnected RDP session (with this one it's been a stuck background), I restart the instance through the Azure portal, and then am able to RDP in normally. Also, if I log-out of the computer (vs. leaving an RDP session disconnected), connecting again later via RDP has worked fine.

The other example, is a VM running in an enterprise vSphere environment. That one is internal to the corp network, meaning I need to connect to the company's VPN first, before establishing an RDP session. When I'm not able to reconnect to the disconnected RDP session, I can log in to the computer using the console through vSphere. After doing this, connecting via RDP (which then overtakes the console session) will sometimes start working properly again. Other times, the desktop UI elements will be visible, but cannot be clicked/interacted with. If I then get on the computer via the vSphere console again, and log out of Windows, a new RDP session to the computer will work fine again. I normally have a bunch of programs running to make working more convenient (Outlook, several browsers/tabs, SSMS, etc.), and it seems the RDP reconnect problem happens more often when more things are running, but I haven't been witnessing the problem long enough to know/verify for sure.

So finally, is anyone else able to reproduce this behavior?

Cheers!

This worked. Thank you.
