Oh, I never shell out a penny more than I have to. Both my Acer and the Dell Latitude 5410 in 'My Computers' below were bought as used machines at less than a year old. Hardly been used at all, but nowhere near the price of a new one.

In fact, as far as I can recall I don't think I've ever bought a PC from new. I've either built my own or bought used machines :wink:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

All previous laptops I've used were all big fat old used HP or Acer tanks!

I have getting on for a dozen laptops now, all in use (admittedly, some less often than others). Of those, there's just one that I haven't upgrade at some time (more RAM, SSD upgrade, etc.). I think this one was the most challenging - just getting inside was the difficult bit.

I was just on their web site. Those prices are for the new 16" laptop. They also have a 13" starting at $899. I'm impressed. I think that I may try one of these as my next laptop :-)

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I have no way of knowing, but I would think that bigger is better on a modular laptop.

I watched Linus' video (posted above). Those things look pretty amazing.
And Linus' reviews seem pretty spot on.

A refurbished one with the same specs is currently $480 in the Dell Store on Amazon.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I think that the statement “Life is too short” is actually incorrect.
If you want the hinges to last, open (or fold) your laptop slowely. It only takes an extra few seconds and will ensure your hinges last the laptops lifetime. I’ve never had one break and I have had quite a few flexible/folding 2 in 1 laptops.

When they first started coming out with touch screen laptops, I drew up a laptop with a smaller touch screen located on the base (above the keyboard), and emailed it to all the laptop manufacturer's.
I thought that would keep the fingerprints off the main screen.

I did later see a prototype laptop, like that, but it never made it to the market.

I always thought the main screen, being a touch screen would be weird.
I figured it would get covered with Doritos dust, pretty fast.

I guess smart phones proved that, fairly quickly. :D

I have mixed feelings. I like a 16" on the desktop because it does offer some more versatility (more ports, better cooling, etc). but I love the portability of a small 13" laptop. As I get older, I have to admit that a larger 16" screen appeals to me :-)

Did you know that touchscreens don't sell very well in Germany? That is supposedly because the Germans can't stand fingerprints and smudges on the screen. I don't know how true that is, just repeating what I have heard reported several times.

I generally like my Dell and HP experience. Lenovo can be fine for some things, but they are a bit more iffy. I generally buy the machines that are more business oriented. For custom builds, I like Asus Boards.

I'm not a laptop person myself but I've seen enough Lenovo Yogas with broken hinges to stay away from them. Lenovo has known about the hinge design for years but hasn't done anything about it as far as I know. In some instances the hinges strip the tiny screws that hold them in making it necessary to replace the case and those cases cost an arm and a leg .Sweet little laptops otherwise. I had 3 I've stripped for parts. The owners didn't want to invest what it was going to cost to fix them. Neither did I.
