My IT support career led me to specialise in NT server and Exchange server administration, that and desktop support. Took the Microsoft MCP exams and everything, still got the certificates and badges in a draw somewhere. It was NT4.0 server and Win'95 desktops by the time I retired.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

My IT experience was mostly on IBM Mainframes. PCs were just a sideline.

That is why I went to Mint I do not like to lose the use of my data and machine for up to an hour for their reboots. In Mint the only time I need to reboot is for a kernel update which takes all 3 minutes to reboot.

The down time on a Windows Update is only a few minutes these days. Even for an upgrade it's only about 10 minutes. It takes a good while to get to the reboot but you can continue working while that's happening.

I have one Windows machine it is however a HD and still takes a long time to update. I have one machine that is Mint that does a lot of background stuff for me and has not been updated in over a year if it ain't broken don't fix it.LOL

As I told Keith this morning, I've been a 'Microsoft Guy' all my working life. I know my way round every flavor of Windows from 3.1 onwards, and how to tweak their inner workings. I like Mint, I have it as a VM, but I really don't feel I know my way around it yet (if ever).

Windows on the other hand I can get to do the seemingly impossible :wink:

Oh, and it's not the updates that take the time, it's my self-imposed routine of cleaning up and imaging each of my 8 (soon to be 9) machines after each Patch Tuesday update!

With Windows backups are a necessity I have had to reinstall several times because of a bad update and lost the use of a tablet because of an update it put the machine in standby mode and would not come out of it until it run the battery down all the way which took 3 weeks nonremovable battery.

I don't think I've ever had a bad update. Nor have I ever felt the need to do a reinstall. I would have expected with my eclectic menagerie of machines at least one of them would have given me grief, but no....

My 'main machine' is running an OS that started life as an OEM install of Windows 7 on my previous 'main machine', took the free upgrade to 10 when it was released, then every update up to 21H1 when I migrated it to the new machine. It's on Win11 22H2 now.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I don't do any cleanups, I just leave everything alone as it comes when I install it and seldom there is an issue.
