Same here, luckily the water company workmen are hired from an independent company and he wasn't even aloud to tell us who to get, but he did and did the job. Because of the sheer amount of water we were loosing they had to issue us a court notice giving us 7 days to get it fixed

I understand completely. No doubt it was old, galvanized pipe.

And to add insult to injury, over the years it corrodes internally, and restricts water volume.

If I were purchasing an older house today, priority one would be to replace all of it.

That is a sound plan, we have done work and improvements as we went along. It is a typical 1960's UK style bungalow with the really long front room window and now the law says you cannot have a single window that big so we had to side windows on each end

5 years ago I had to have all the water lines under my house and the ones going to the street replaced because I kept having leaks in different places and the city wrote me a letter and told me that when they read the meter it showed that I was loseing too much water and I needed to have an outside plumber to check it out All at my cost.

Try owning a home in a 'Historical District' in the U.S.. Talk about a pain in the butt! You have to get approval from the city to even change paint color on it.

Again, experience talking. ...but never again.

Mine was an actual court noticed, the guy was very good though he said they have to do it to everyone with a leak that looses a certain amount of water

Here Rod, typically there is a utility easement. the Water Company/Utility Company is only responsible for the line from the watermain to the meter (including the meter), on the outlet side of the meter to anything involving your home, is the customer responsibility.

Much the same here.

Although these homes are much desired and valuable, it certainly comes at a cost. Not just money, but stress from anything you do has to be approved in order to maintain it's 'Historical' value.

But without being metered, how do they know what to charge? Every household, will use a different amount of water, depending upon its occupancy.
