This just gets better.

No Killer software installed. Only drivers, and only the older 3.XXXX drivers, from MSI.

With my current setup, using wired, I'm only getting half my normal gigabit speeds. Since this is a new install, I decided to go for broke, and force uninstalled both NICs, telling Windows to attempt to remove the (Killer) drivers, and then verifying this was the case (before rebooting) by also using RAPR to force remove the drivers.

Upon reboot, my drivers are now stock Windows Drivers:

And my speeds are back up to snuff.

Go figure lol.
Yes, (in)famous Intel Killer drivers,

But the stock drivers are crap too. If I do back to back Speedtests, the second (and following) test is capped at 100 Mbit - 200 Mbit.

It's weird AF.

A side note related to this intel driver suites:

- if you check the description:

  • 23.40.0.4 for Intel® Killer™ 1550, AX1650, AX1675, AX 1690
  • 1.1.4.42 (Windows 10), 2.1.3.15 (Windows 11) for Intel® Killer™ E3100

  • 3.1524.405.6 for Killer Networking Software
The actual Driver is unchanged (from the one you already have installed with your last update). Only thing they changed is the 3.1524.405.6 for Killer Networking Software. Mentioned this because - Disabling the Killer Software/Services and running - just the driver alone (with some modifications only from the Network Adapter) - proved to be the most reliable and higher performance/stability option for quite a lot of people (myself included). That being said - if you're in same pot - installing this Updates which change/update just the Killer Networking Software - is meaningless (since it's disabled anyway).

But hey, maybe for yous - this is different - and the Killer Networking Software helps in some way. Then, i guess it's worth updating. :)

Lol. If it helps anyone, I'd be surprised.

Of course, even weirder is the fact that on my normal Windows 11 machine, I still get drivers with the Windows 10 versioning scheme.

Screenshot 2024-05-14 162648.pngScreenshot 2024-05-14 162701.png

And, for the record, the latest drivers that my machine will install.

But Killer software never gets installed on my machine. Ever.

Screenshot 2024-05-14 162835.png

One day, if I can ever get the Killer drivers for Windows 11 to actually install and not cause nothing but BSODs, I might be able to get to current.

I may try to tackle this again this weekend.

I'm concerned that the official driver packages I have from MSI are versioned as Win10 drivers, not WIn11 drivers, and that maybe that has been a part of my problem.

I'm not expecting a lot of success, though. Fingers crossed!

Holy crap! I fixed it! (Sort of lol).

CAVEAT: The standalone driver packages I downloaded below included the drivers as well as an executable to install the DriverHub software. Windows Defender flagged is as a Potentially unwanted program, but I allowed it, as the file is a standard .ZIP and will not automatically execute anything upon extraction. After extracting the files, which are the executable and another .ZIP with the actual drivers, I simply deleted the executable, then proceeded to extract the actual driver files. Subsequent checking showed the files had not been tampered with, as the hashes matched for other files around the web for these two driver sets.

So, I finally decided to take a few days of vacation, and yesterday I spent a lot of time troubleshooting with LinkSys support about an issue with my Atlas Pro Mesh system. Continuing on in that trend, I decided to troubleshoot my NICs and why I was unable to update the drivers.

So, after a lot of reading, I found a particular post (I think on Microsoft answers . Learn / somewhere there) that suggested that I change the driver to the build in driver package from Microsoft.

Screenshot 2024-06-28 155528.png

Then I found a reddit post that linked to Driverhub downloads for the drivers only, from the latest package from Intel:

For my 2 NICs (E2600 and E3000 2.5 GB), these are the links for the drivers (links disabled so you have to manually go there, either from the Reddit post above or by manually altering the lines below into proper links):

https:xxwww.drvhub.net/devices/network/killer/e2600-gigabit-ethernet-controller

https:xxwww.drvhub.net/devices/network/killer/e3000-2-5-gigabit-ethernet-controller

Using Driver Store Explorer, I verified I downloaded the files that matched the name of the Microsoft driver from 2021. I then used the same update driver function to point to the extracted drivers for one of the NICs, and it did not blow up or cause any BSODs, or anything. All network functionality was perfectly fine, and it survived through 3 restarts as well.

I then did the same for the other NIC.

Screenshot 2024-06-28 155444.pngScreenshot 2024-06-28 160356.png

Finally, I got it installed, though I suspect that the full package from Intel will still cause me headaches in the future, so I'm bookmarking the main DH Killer page:

https:xxwww.drvhub.net/devices/network/killer

Which lists all their different NICs. But note the caveat above, please.

Finally! This has been a long time coming!

I do believe that swapping to the Microsoft drivers first is what really helped me resolve the issue, as that was one thing I'd never tried - I was always jumping off from the latest drivers from MSI, both when they showed the correct version as well as when they showed the incorrect (windows 10) version.
