Release notes: Macrium Reflect X Patch Details

Reflect X launched on 8th October.

The Reflect X Knowledge Base is now live:

We now know the trade in offers that will be available to those with older V8, v7, and v6 one-time licences, and for recently purchased perpetual v8 licences.

I purchased a one-time license
If you purchased on or after July 1st, 2024, you have three options;
  • Continue using Reflect 8 for as long as you want. You will continue to have access to 12 months technical support from the date you bought the licenses.
  • Trade in (your existing license will be deactivated after your new license is activated) your one-time license (which has one year of support from the date of purchase) and receive a 3-year Annual Plan at no extra cost. Macrium may make loyalty offers available at the end of your 3-year term. However, even without a license, Reflect always allows you to restore/recover your data (you won’t be able to make new backups). We’ve also made your backup files open-source - it’s your data and you own it.
  • NEW: Trade in (your existing license will be deactivated after your new license is activated) your one-time license (which has one year support from the date of purchase) and receive 50% off the normal annual plan price for life (must turn on auto-renew and not allow the license to expire/lapse).
Home users have 6 months from the launch of Reflect X to decide which option suits them best. Step-by-step instructions to obtain either option from the grace period will be published this week.

For Reflect Home users who purchased V8 before July 1, 2024:
You are eligible for two options. The first option is 50% off Annual plans for life. Option 2 is our “Better than Black Friday 2024 Offer:” 3 years for the price of 2:

If you choose 50% off annual plans for life, you will have to trade in your current Reflect Home V8 license.

If you choose 3 years for the price of 2, you can keep your Reflect Home V8 license. This amount must be paid up front and at the end of the plan, customers may renew based on offers available at the time (or return to your one-time license.)

For Home V6 & V7: We are offering 3 years for the price of two. This amount must be paid up front and at the end of the plan, customers may renew based on offers available at the time (or return to your one-time license.)This offer ends March 31st 2025.

If you have a Macrium Account, then the trade in offers are available there. If you don't, then you can register for a Macrium Account with the email address you used for your original purchase.

Upgrading from v8, v7 or v6

Viewing your Upgrade Options

Based on the timing of your existing license purchase and the current status of your Support and Maintenance plan, there are various personalized upgrade options available. There are multiple upgrade paths that can be accessed through the Macrium Reflect application or the Macrium Account.

That was a perpetual licence for v8, support expiring has no bearing on the validity of the licence, it remains valid for life.

What you should have done before installing the Trial was to remove the licence and copy and save your key, that's Help > Remove licence.... Failing to do so would leave the key as being in use on an install of Relect that no longer exists (so can no longer release it). If so, even though support has expired you should still be able to email Macrium, they should be able release a 'locked' key for re-use.

Check in your account under licenses. They will show as installed. Go into each computer, launch Macrium, Help, Remove License and then check your account. They should show as available.

When you buy new X licenses choose the option that does not trade in existing licenses. If you bought a four pack, you have to trade in or keep all four, you can't trade in less than four.

Your plan to get new licenses for X and keep your V8 licenses is sound.

Thanks Kelper. The only decision is whether to just stay on v8 just now, as they do everything I need, and look at upgrading to X either when the 6 month offer is about to expire or when Macrium stops supporting v8 in October 2025. Our 3 other incidental PC's have v8 Free installed and still seem to work. Thanks again.

...and should do for quite some time to come. I have more PCs than licences, all the others run Reflect Free. I've tested it in the latest Insider Canary build and it still works there.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

How's that exaggerating. ? It happened as I described. Support has ended after a year. It was bought and registered/activated on Wed, May 19, 2021 so that expired too. I have no way to pay for new subscription model nor I would.
I just restored windows to 23H2 which took about 3 hours instead of usual 15 minutes to half an hour.

I know I'm asking you to crystal ball here but do you think upgrade offers to vX are likely to be offered after the six month upgrade deadline has passed? I would imagine it would depend on the take up of vX?? Mitch.

Finally, one must ask: What justifies the ongoing cost?
Possibly the health of the ongoing Company... meaning if it dies, you lose everything, your current license as well as its support.

I think the bean counters are just trying to get more value for the shareholders. In the UK and in most countries this is a binding requirement on directors. It's sad, because the great whisky houses in Scotland all send their casks to England to be vatted or blended by accountants. All the great whisky producers are selling their family silver. Every brand has NOS ( no age statement) whiskies, which means they are three-years old. Where will the ten and sixteen-year-old whiskeys come from?
It seems that companies like Macrium are monetising their greatest asset which was the trust and the loyalty of their customers, for short-term profitability.

Just 12 months is the correct answer. MiniTool has run that stunt often enough before.

As a general observation, the advent of Macrium ReflectX as an expensive programme (after having offered a solid freeware version for quite some years) has triggered a small avalanche of "offers" from competitors such as EaseUS and MiniTool that purport to offer "Pro" versions for less money than ReflectX. None do exactly that of course, and the comparative costs are not actually significantly different.

While I dislike this as a consumer, naturally, it's quite interesting to watch as the deep shadow that freeware Macrium has cast over the market is slowly being pushed aside.

Looking at ReflectX's steep pricing (and the market stunt of "trading" an older perpetual license for a short-term discount - after which you are right back on perpetual lease payments), for myself the most rational decision is to keep using version 8.1 until something in the OS breaks it, as well as using both freeware Hasleo and Aomei as belt and braces.

@CountMike , this givaway of ShadowmakerPro might be useful to you??? Don't know if the offer is permanent or just 12 months. Hopefully permanent. Offer open for 14 days. Worth a look may be?
I'm not trying it as I'm using Hasleo an an alternative.

Downloaded and used it to make a backup. It took about half an hour to make 165GB .MPI file from 1TB disk with about 380GB used. That's about same as MR. Didn't do much more testing yet. It seems to offer most of same features as MR.

I think we bought a perpetual license of Macrium Reflect for a reason. To use it until it expires.

That's why I am going to keep using version 8.1 until the license expires on October 2025.
