Release notes: Macrium Reflect X Patch Details

Reflect X launched on 8th October.

The Reflect X Knowledge Base is now live:

We now know the trade in offers that will be available to those with older V8, v7, and v6 one-time licences, and for recently purchased perpetual v8 licences.

I purchased a one-time license
If you purchased on or after July 1st, 2024, you have three options;
  • Continue using Reflect 8 for as long as you want. You will continue to have access to 12 months technical support from the date you bought the licenses.
  • Trade in (your existing license will be deactivated after your new license is activated) your one-time license (which has one year of support from the date of purchase) and receive a 3-year Annual Plan at no extra cost. Macrium may make loyalty offers available at the end of your 3-year term. However, even without a license, Reflect always allows you to restore/recover your data (you won’t be able to make new backups). We’ve also made your backup files open-source - it’s your data and you own it.
  • NEW: Trade in (your existing license will be deactivated after your new license is activated) your one-time license (which has one year support from the date of purchase) and receive 50% off the normal annual plan price for life (must turn on auto-renew and not allow the license to expire/lapse).
Home users have 6 months from the launch of Reflect X to decide which option suits them best. Step-by-step instructions to obtain either option from the grace period will be published this week.

For Reflect Home users who purchased V8 before July 1, 2024:
You are eligible for two options. The first option is 50% off Annual plans for life. Option 2 is our “Better than Black Friday 2024 Offer:” 3 years for the price of 2:

If you choose 50% off annual plans for life, you will have to trade in your current Reflect Home V8 license.

If you choose 3 years for the price of 2, you can keep your Reflect Home V8 license. This amount must be paid up front and at the end of the plan, customers may renew based on offers available at the time (or return to your one-time license.)

For Home V6 & V7: We are offering 3 years for the price of two. This amount must be paid up front and at the end of the plan, customers may renew based on offers available at the time (or return to your one-time license.)This offer ends March 31st 2025.

If you have a Macrium Account, then the trade in offers are available there. If you don't, then you can register for a Macrium Account with the email address you used for your original purchase.

Viewing your Upgrade Options

We all know if the a file has been backed up but the file is later changed, the new file will be overwritten with the o done.ld one in the backup if a restore is.

I presume if the file is not backed up, the new file is not affected on a restore?

If you're talking about imaging (rather than File'n'Folder backup), if the backup has no version of that file then the restore will have no version of that file... nothing newer on the disk which is not in the restored image will be there when the process is done (same as any imaging system).

Am I misunderstanding your statement?

Ah yeah - it would work like you say thinking about it.

No different really to backing up a blank folder then adding a new file. The restore would restore the folder as blank.

People need to be aware that if you exclude files from a backup, that you will wipe the same files on a restore.

For most tick box items, it does not matter, but the downloads folder is different.

A few years ago, MS decided to include the downloads folder in disk cleanup and many lost downloaded data, not realising it had to be unchecked to prevent it being cleared

After quite a lot of negative feedback, MS eventually reneged and removed downloads from the disk cleanup menu.

However in perverse MS fashion, they tried to sneak it in again in Storage Sense, although with much more obvious as a separate setting.

Personally I think Paramount have made an error of judgement including the downloads folder (similar to MS's disk cleanup error) as a tick box item as it is not a temporary file folder (albeit many treat it as one).

All the other checkboxes are temporary files, and will not cause data loss.

The principle should be only temporary files be excluded from that menu unless you specifically set up a filter.

I moved my Downloads folder away from the System drive. I have a separate File and folder backup for that

Yeah good idea. I sort of half do that by changing Edge download folder but not all (most) downloads come from Edge.

Nothing that can be lost is ever stored on my system drive.
All my user folders Docs, Pics, Music and Videos are moved to a separate drive and backed up
After a clean Windows install I just point to these folders and give access to the new user account.

Is Macrium sabotaging me ?
First it asked me to try out X but now saying that it's expired after 3 days and is only in Restore mode. After that i tried to enter my license but it's not working, apparently that expired too. Reinstalled MR but no luck with my license either.
Because of problems with 24H2, II decided to restore to last version of 23H2 I made just few days ago. What used to take about half an hour, its now in 3rd hour and only at 50%. That*s from fast NVMe disk to even faster one.
I also have a free MR on second disk on Insider Dev and it works there as usual.
Looks like it's apparently time to find another backup program, hate being blackmailed !!!!!

Don't you think you are exaggerating.

It seems to work fine for most users here.

Put in a support request to Macrium Reflect.

For being 100% safe , you have to use different backuppers , each backup-time !
If one fails the other one will safe you ...........
f.e. Macrium, AoMEI, Hasleo ,etc and on different locations !

Don't you think you are exaggerating.

It seems to work fine for most users here.

Put in a support request to Macrium Reflect.
How's that exaggerating. ? It happened as I described. Support has ended after a year. It was bought and registered/activated on Wed, May 19, 2021 so that expired too. I have no way to pay for new subscription model nor I would.
I just restored windows to 23H2 which took about 3 hours instead of usual 15 minutes to half an hour.

I bought a four pack over a year ago. When I ran X on trial I lost one as it was still linked from 8.1 to this computer. But now I have it back and can run 8.1 with full functionality, just no support or upgrades.

Hi I need some advice please. I bought a 4 pack v8 Perpetual Licence last year which we use on our 4 main PC's. We have another 3 that we use from time to time. I can keep our 4 Perpetual Licences and buy another 4 vX licences at 3 years for the price of 2 if that's what we decide to do. Should this be done through the Macrium Account as there has been a report on the Macrium Forum that, done this way, all 8 licences are shown as used and we cannot use our 4 v8 licences for our less used machines. Should the v8 licences be removed/uninstalled from the main PC's and vX downloaded with the new vX keys rather than through the upgrade method in the Macrium Account. I had thought of buying vX as a new customer but that is expensive (£80) for the first year and I suppose 100% from year 2 onwards. There are no multi year packages for new customers that I can see. Or we could just stay on v8. Would appreciate your advice. Mitch.

That was a perpetual licence for v8, support expiring has no bearing on the validity of the licence, it remains valid for life.

What you should have done before installing the Trial was to remove the licence and copy and save your key, that's Help > Remove licence.... Failing to do so would leave the key as being in use on an install of Relect that no longer exists (so can no longer release it). If so, even though support has expired you should still be able to email Macrium, they should be able release a 'locked' key for re-use.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
