How technology has changed. I learnt how to drive with a truck that had a 3 speed on the column shifter. My son (43) is just now learning how to drive vehicles with standard shift. His new job requires him to move vehicles to a spot where he can take pictures so they can be posted on the internet.

Automatics were OK, especially in seriously hilly cities. But I loved "sticks".

Learning to drive with a stick was a big plus for me when I started working. Most of the trucks were stick shifts. It didn't take me long to learn how to shift gears without using the clutch. I shift my motorcycle the same way. Just need to be at the correct RPM.

I learned to drive a pickup truck with "four on the floor"! First, second, third, and reverse.

I started out on a Three on the Tree, then, through every iteration of 5 to 15 gear stick...,
... now my brand new Mixer is an automatic!!!

I always liked four the best.

With three, the gears felt too long, and everything above four felt like I had to shift way to much.

My first stick... 67' Mustang 289 4 speed. Got me some tickets with that bad boy.

My current VW Jetta is a five-speed stick..., fun if you're in the mode but, mostly it's a p-i-t-a!

Virtually impossible to sip a hot coffee, wolf down a Whopper, take a phone call and smoke a cigarette all at the same time with a stick!!! :zany:

Most of the trucks where I work are now automatic except for two very old dump trucks and the two very old Mack rolloff container trucks. The new International rolloff container truck is automatic. Because the trucks with the stick shifts are old they are running out of drivers that can drive them. They made a change in the requirements to get a CDL. If the driver wants to drive a truck that is stick shift they have to take the test with a truck that has stick shift. I'm sure you know that though. Shortly after I retired and before I went back to work part time I dropped my CDL. I wasn't going to pay the extra fee for the license and the cost to keep up my medical card.

The UK is more rigid than US - if you pass test in an auto, you can only drive an auto. If you pass test in a manual (horribly termed "stick shift" in US), you can drive a manual or an auto.

By far the vast majority pass their test in a manual (probably greater than 95%). I do not know anybody whoever passed in an auto only.

Interestingly, the governnent is thinking about relaxing this with advent of electric cars which are all automatic, but I do not see the need to so this.

The same goes for our CDL drivers. What class license and endorsements you have determines what you can drive. I had a class B with air brake and motorcycle endorsements.

You could not leave old Dev either.

I shake my head in amazement at people who use Insider versions but do not understand simple basics protections.
First and foremost, do not put all your eggs in one basket.

1) Always keep release version as your main OS (keep image backups).

2) Boot insider versions as dual boot option - A great and very easy way of doing this is clone existing release version to a native boot virtual hard drive

3) Boot to vhd clone of Windows - join what ever Insider program you wish

4) Optional - backup vhds after each major build upgrade (you can use image backups but just easier to copy whole vhd assuming backup storage space is not an issue).

Follow the above and never care again about having to clean install Insider versions, which channel to use (you can have a vhd for each channel if you wish).
