Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


Well, this is weird. Just had the opposite of what I would expect happen on "incompatible" hardware.

I have a really old HP laptop. Somewhere around a 2010 or 2011 vintage. That machine originally shipped with Windows 7. It ran both Windows 10 and Windows 11 fine, although I had to use the tricks for incompatible hardware to get my clean install of Windows onto that machine.

For both Win 10 and Win 11, the only thing that was not working correctly was the battery charge level status. For some reason it would show a completely nonsensical charge level all the time.

I just performed a clean install of Windows 11 22H2 on that machine, and unlike Windows 10 and Windows 11 original release, the battery level is now working!

So the oddity is that Windows 11 22H2 is actually working BETTER on this machine than was Windows 10.

Weird, but I like it!

I have noticed that the new updates introduce minor bugs in certain displays and also clear the minor bugs in displays that were introduced in earlier updates. This is so with compatible hardware also and I have been ignoring it and not reporting it to Microsoft because I am certain that the bug would repaired in an update in the near future..

It makes some sense. Newer upgrades also install new drivers (unless you explicitly select not to run Windows Update during installation and keep disconnected from the internet). One of those drivers was for the battery level.

Tried again with all cards out except AMD FirePro W2100. Installed Microsft Basic VGA driver. Followed all the steps, but still:

"We can't tell if yourPC is ready to continue installing Windows 11." like described in detail in my post 1275.

Any help appreciated very much.

Have you restarted the PC since you received that message?
I suspect 22H2 is buggy & this may be the cause.
Have you tried choosing not to install updates & installing while offline?

As written, I have followd all the steps:
  1. Plugged-off all non-essential PCI/PCIe cards
  2. Updated AMD FirePro W2100 driver to Microsoft Basic VGA driver (or similar, don't remember the name correctly)
  3. Restarted the PC
  4. Disabled all non-Microsoft services
  5. Disabled all startup programs
  6. Cleaned-up C: drive (where Windows 11 is on)
  7. Plugged-off the network
  8. Restarted the PC
  9. Mounted the English International 22H2 ISO
  10. Started Setup.exe
  11. Did the same steps as in my post 1275 which means that I copied an empty appraiserres.dll, selected not to du updates, etc.
Same result as in post 1275.

Yes, downloading the ISO from MS.

I wanted to avoid the Rufus method, because I don't want to reinstall all my applications (three versions of Visual Studio, WDK, all the developer stuff, office, etc.). Takes three days until everything is in place again.

If you create the USB with Rufus it can be used to bypass compatibility check both for a clean installation (boot from USB) or for upgrade (run Setup from Windows). Alternatively just mount the ISO (open with Explorer) and run Setup. At first Setup screen, before doing anything else disable Windows Defender or any other antivirus you have, disconnect from the internet and replace the file appraiserres.dll with a dummy empty file (see older posts). You can then proceed.

THat's exactly what I have done, so I doubt that using an USB stick and starting Setup.exe under Windows 11 will change anything. By some reason this is always failing on my machine.

Again these appraiserres.dll I haven't bothered with. I simply used RuFus bypass function and I opened the setup file and the upgrade began. I don't see why y'all having issues

I used this hack (replace the appraiserres.dll file with an empty dummy) to upgrade at least three unsupported computers (both my systems and my father's) from Windows 11 21H2 to 22H2. Every time I succeeded. The important part is to disconnect from the internet before upgrading. If you are connected the upgrade fails. Been there, done that.

Yep I used a new iso Monday and ms must of locked it down a little better

How to upgrade from Win11 21h2 to Win 11 22h2 - A guide

Hi, MS must have locked the current 11 iso down There is no rename or delete for that matter on the context menu Pasting another new .dill file shows no permissions repeatedly Guess I'll have to use rufus and a see if it's usb version can be used for inplace update.

In that case, use an earlier 21H2 ISO, upgrade and then install all updates. Next year that 23H2 is out, there will probably be a new workaround to try.
PS: 22H2 upgrade fails on unsupported computers if you are connected to the internet. Disconnect from the internet before upgrading.

Hi,
Don't believe 22h2 is being offered via update system atm to incompatible hardware or maybe just throttled release atm
Either way only way to get 22h2 fast is mount a iso or maybe esd manually.

If you read order posts, you will see that not a single incompatible computer is ever offered to upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 or from Windows 11 21H2 to 22H2 via Windows Update. The only way to upgrade is to manually download the latest Windows 11 ISO and bypass compatibility check.

Yep Yep and Yep. Pretty sure Rufus will update it's methods upon 23H2 or update its bypass or if Microsoft even cares at this point (not sueing Rufus)

Hi,
New events suggest also using rufus not doing it yourself which you might test and see if you also hit a roadblock in permissions like I did Monday messing with dill file on new iso.
