Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


I just used the Rufus method, and it all went well.
I even stayed online and let it check for updates.

You were just lucky. In three different unsupported computers I dared stay online, upgrade started seemingly OK but failed after some progress before the first restart. Disconnecting from the internet and trying again, it completed successfully the first stage, restarted and did the second stage without any issues. One more restart later and I was at the Windows desktop having completed successfully the upgrade. I recommend that everyone else stays disconnected from the internet. You have nothing to lose. I bet you can leave an hour or less without internet. Use your smartphone if you want anything during this time.

Maybe I was lucky, or maybe the current version of Rufus allows it to happen. I can't answer either way.
These are the only two Windows 11 Rufus settings that I used to make my UFD.

I've used Rufus for a clean install without changing anything and my old desktop happily installs Windows 11.

Sadly not true in my case. Can't use Windows 11 in my Lenovo A275 laptop, because AMD graphics drivers don't work in 11 for this model.
I have tested old / new drivers and always crashes with errorcode 43. Drivers work perfectly in Windows 10.

Laptop has AMD PRO A12-8830B processor and AMD Radeon R7 graphics. I believe this laptop is gen6 and you need gen8 for windows 11

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

If you're prepared to put up with the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter then Windows 11 will run. I have it running on an old netbook with an Intel Atom that so old it doesn't even have working Win10 drivers, let alone ones that would work in 11.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

Yes it runs, but you can't adjust screen brightness for example. Screen is very bright.

Laptop is not super old, it has NVME, DDR4, USB-C.. Problem here is AMD, same model with Intel works fine.

I guess you have tried the latest official drivers directly from AMD. It is a little weird that they work on Windows 10 but not on 11. I bet Windows Update did its damage there. If you have a spare disk, I suggest trying a clean installation. I would not connect to the internet until I would try installing the latest official drivers first, to prevent Windows Update messing with the drivers. You can also try to install Windows 10, make sure all drivers are OK and then upgrade to Windows 11 while staying disconnected from the internet to prevent Windows Update screwing your working drivers. Use Windows Update Show Hide Tool to hide (block) ALL driver updates just in case.

I absolutely don't get it. Repeatedly, I've posted a simple Three Step Process for installing Windows 11 on an OLD PC, that absolutely does not meet the compatibility requirements. And yet y'all act like AA members, in love with the 12 step program.:lmao::lmao:

Three basic steps is all that's required, and yes that uses Rufus 3.22 or later, with ALL Options selected.
And a clean ISO downloaded from any Trusted Site.

Are we ready for Windows 12, yet?

That's why I install any new version on my test laptop first (see 1st system specs). If anything goes wrong or I don't like the new version, I keep my main PC (2nd system specs) with the old version until issues solved. Then I can safely upgrade my main PC. If I didn't have a test laptop, I would use a virtual machine. In worst case I would use a friend's computer I would not mind to format and start over to test the new version before I upgrade to it.

You were right. Clean install WITHOUT internet connection and original Win10 driver from Lenovo works.

If you update from 10 or install 11 with Windows updates turned on it will not work.

Importantly, if it's already broken, Lenovo driver does not help. Not even if you uninstall previous drivers first.

Don't have fruitless hopes (I think the English term is wishful thinking). Just treat your computer as unsupported and enjoy the Windows 11 experience. Don't wait for Microsoft to permit you install Windows 11. Just ignore their outrageous requirements and enjoy it now.

There are a few ready made CMD files to do this, they may have gotten their techniques from here, ;-)

AveYo's CMD Script is a good example: MediaCreationTool.bat/bypass11/Skip_TPM_Check_on_Dynamic_Update.cmd at main · AveYo/MediaCreationTool.bat

Run once to enable unsupported updates, run again to disable them.

This will allow unsupported upgrades through mounted ISO or Windows Update

There is even one available to get and prep an entire ISO:
GitHub - illsk1lls/Win-11-Download-Prep-Tool: Downloads the latest Win 11 x64 ISO direct from MS - Then SysPreps each index, removing: Network requirements during install, TPM requirements, S-Mode, and RAM requirements.
