Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


The 23H2 enablement package just unlocks the features already present (like going from Home to Pro). It doesn't change any system files, so it doesn't need to create a Windows.old folder. This is good if you have too little free disk space, but I am not sure what you can do if you have issues. I would probable try to go back to 22H2 by doing an in-place upgrade/repair using the 22H2 ISO. Or it could be best to do an in-place upgrade/repair using the 23H2 ISO. Either way I would rather not find out o_O

I got 23H2 enablement package and I am now on 23H2. Everything seems fine but I don't have copilot. Any advice?

I read in another thread that you need a Microsoft account to use copilot. I have a local account, so I haven't see it either. It might be though because I use Explorer Patcher and Open Shell to change the default taskbar. If I enable the original Windows 11 taskbar it might be there. I don't want to do it right now. I will first do a little research to find out what is copilot and what other new features are there in 23H2 that I haven't yet noticed.

PS: I see copilot replaced Cortana which I have disabled, that's why I haven't seen it.

I have just updated my Win 10 22h2 to Win 11 23h2 (again as I updated last year and had issues so I moved back to Win 10 22h2)
I used a Win 10 22h2 iso, mounted, copied to a folder and replaced the \sources\install.wim with Win 11 23h2 \sources\install.wim. Then I ran setup.exe

I find my method easier. Non of that *File replacement. I used WINTOUSB Bypass feature then I use IMGBURN to create the ISO (after I create the USB I extract the Files to a Folder then use IMGBURN with that *etfsboot File it makes the ISO Bootable

All THE .DLL replacement is just confusing

setup.exe /product server

This apparently bypasses compatibility check without having to replace the file. I would stay disconnected from the internet though, just in case. I will try it soon and post results.

Although I got off the road a little because I did not have the proper prerequisites installed, an easy way to do an in-place upgrade on unsupported hardware now is to first make certain KB5031455 and KB5027397 (Enablement Package) are installed; then using the latest 23H2 ISO, mount it and use the setup.exe /product server switch from an administrator command line. That was what I did although in a backwards manner.

Since updating to build 22621.2506 (KB5031455) and installing the enablement package already upgrades the computer to 23H2, why did you run Setup from the ISO after that? Did you have issues to fix?

No, I was on 22H2 and installed from the ISO, I had not installed either KB5031455 or KB5027397 (Enablement PKG). After installing from the ISO winver still showed 22H2 even though as I later learned 23H2 had been installed from that ISO. After several reboots trying to fix things with a Restart Menu and File Explorer that did not work and also installing the Enablement Package, Windows Update showed that a Restart was necessary. After the Restart everything was in order and WU itself had installed KB5031455. It was a convoluted install of 23H2 for me.

Edit: I should be clear that I believe the ISO 23H2 was a successful install as System Information shows the install date as 10/31/2023

which is the date I installed the ISO; after that I installed the Enablement PKG on the same day but winver still showed 22H2, and only the next day 11/1/2023 did WU say that a Restart was necessary and it then installed KB5061455 after which winver showed 23H2. Again, convoluted.

No... Anything with a dual core at 2GHZ with 2GB? (4GB) would work. My 775 works

True, they just *Want us to be more secure thus having TPM Etc ehh

Most OEM/Pre-built systems thus they use *Not do good hardware Hence most I know have TPM or they somehow bypass to trick Microsoft

I have personally tested Windows 11 on a Pentium 4 6xx CPU with 2GB RAM. This is the very first Intel 64-bit CPU family. The rule is simple: If it can run Windows 8 64-bit, it can also run Windows 10 64-bit and can be made to run Windows 11 with the same drivers. Been there done that.

I mean for every other version of Windows since the dawn of time, the hardware requirements have been something like... if it has electrons... it'll run Windows.
Then, along comes Windows 11. We''ll protect you... just buy new hardware.

Indeed. When I awoke from my coma in 2016 from my car accident... I was still on win7. I realized win10 then I installed that and so forth current. I'm in no means smart but I know what I'm doing

I lucked out. I needed to upgrade the computer in early 2020.
Luckily, all the hardware I bought was compatible.

When you do an in-place upgrade you always get a windows.old folder, even if upgrading with the same version you already had. The only reason I did the in-place upgrade on my unsupported System Two was to get the 23H2 update early, before MS closed that loophole.

Now that 23H2 is officially available the easiest way to update from 22H2 is to install the enablement package. It is like installing a CU, and shouldn't need any workaround on unsupported devices.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.
