I upgraded my windows 10 non compliant machine using the dummy appraiserres.dll to windows 11 23H2 22631.2506. So far I have seen no problems and it kept everything.

Yes, don't hesitate. If it can run Windows 8 64-bit, it can also run Windows 11, albeit if you have to bypass compatibility check. Confirmed that hundreds of times.

...a year on and we have 23H2 released. Time to test a clean install again.

I use my little old Acer Aspire One AOD270 netbook as my 'miner's canary', if Windows 11 can install and run on this then it should work on anything.

To recap its specs, it fails on every single count except the bare minimum of having a 64-bit processor with more than one core. There is no TPM of any sort, it has a legacy bios (so no secure boot and MBR boot only). It's Intel Atom N2600 has no working 64 bit display drivers available (so only the Microsoft Basic Adapter can be used). The maximum memory a Cedarview Atom like this one can address is specified by the OEM as 2GB, and by Intel as 2.44 GB. It can in fact, when there's a 4GB RAM in its single slot, make 2.99GB available to the OS.

The MCT has not yet been updated, it still makes 22H2, so I had to use the directly downloaded ISO with its larger than 4GB install.wim. Apart from using DISM to split the install.wim into two smaller .swm files to fit on the Fat32 usb the install media was left completely unmodified. To make it more challenging I was installing W11 Home as this PC only has a digital licence for Home.

To bypass all hardware checks at install @hsehestedt's list of registry patches still work.

To complete OOBE without having to connect to the internet and be able to set up with a Local Account I can confirm that the BypassNRO workaround still works.

What is the graphics card? If it is 915G you are out of luck. There is no known WDDM display driver. If however it is 945G, have a look at the optional updates in Advanced section of Windows Update. There should be a basic driver (no Graphics Properties included, just the driver). You can also find the appropriate thread and download hacked Windows 7 drivers that work in Windows 11 and get the Graphics Properties as well along with better performance.

The Intel Atom N2600 is GMA 3600. We've had this conversation before, so far I've found no driver that works well with this PC, the few I have found so far that do work invariably cause a BSoD when shutting down.

GMA 3600​

This integrated graphics system was released in Intel Atom (Cedar Trail, 32 nm) and based on PowerVR SGX545. Unlike the original PowerVR solution, this model is clocked at 400 MHz instead of 200 MHz.[31] It is specifically found in the Intel Atom N2600 processor[32] and Atom D2500[33] models. There just aren't any drivers out there. I've been searching for years and not found any, the GMA 3600 BSoD issue has been well known since Windows 8. There is just one (not very useful) known workaround to fix it, that involves removing every single MS App from the system !

Easiest way to do both is to download the latest Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's site (search for Windows 11 Media Creation Tool, it is in the top results), and use Rufus to create the USB flash drive. Before proceeding Rufus will ask you if you want to bypass compatibility check, of course you reply Yes and continue. This USB flash drive can be used for both upgrade from Windows 10/11 to Windows 11 23H2 (run Setup from inside current Windows system) and for new Windows 11 installation (boot your computer with the USB flash drive).

Old computers generally have an MBR partition style for the disk and boot in Legacy BIOS (aka CSM) mode. For those you must select MBR when using Rufus. With an MBR USB flash drive you can upgrade a Legacy installation (you see the familiar blue Windows logo with the spinning dots when booting) and of course create a new Legacy installation. You cannot repair a modern UEFI installation if Windows doesn't work and you boot from the USB.

Newer computers usually have a GPT partition style for the disk and boot in modern UEFI mode (you see the manufacturer logo with the spinning dots when booting). Obviously with a GPT USB flash drive you can upgrade an UEFI installation and create a new UEFI installation. You cannot repair a Legacy installation if Windows doesn't work and you boot from the USB.

Most modern systems support both Legacy BIOS (aka CSM) and UEFI installations. If you plan to do a new installation it doesn't make any difference. But be careful to create the correct type MBR or GPT USB flash drive if you need to repair an existing Windows 10/11 installation that doesn't work. I have done the same mistakes, so I share here to save you the frustration.

That reminds me of a joke on an old technology magazine. It was a guy bragging to his friend all about his new voice command system he installed in computer that did almost everything. He could open a website, load an application or game, search for files and many more. Suddenly his mother voice was heard asking "Tin forma sou na tin plino?" I downloaded yesterday the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's site to install on a laptop. I wanted to say that it is 23H2 build 22631.2861, so you need to install only a few updates to get the latest of Windows 11. Also the script to patch the Registry (and therefore manually changing the values as well) works for unsupported computers. As does a USB flash drive created with Rufus.
