lost audio/sound after updating to Windows 11 22581.200 Beta Insiders

I am on the Beta Insiders channel and was recently updated to 22581.200 and have a problem with audio. Everything in device manager and the audio output shows correct but there is no sound.

I have done the following:

Restarted the Windows Audio Service which includes stopping and restarting a Service called Agent Activation Runtime except it is unsuccessful in stopping that service so I had to use Process Hacker to go to the Process ID of that service and kill it successfully then when I do a restart of the Windows Audio Service which also now successfully restarts Agent Activation Runtime, I will get sound only in Windows Media Player when playing a MP4 file that is opened by Windows Media Player but there is still no sound in both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers. This is on a Dell XPS 15 9570 notebook using Realtek UAD Drivers. Anyone else have the audio issue?

I'm not sure it's a driver issue since you said it does play via Media Player with certain files, but what I would do, is go to the Dell's website, find the latest drivers, but BEFORE I installed them, I would open Device Manager and "Remove Hardware" on the audio driver(s). After they remove, install the drivers (before a reboot) and after reboot even if it doesn't request it.

Dell does not provide anything newer than 6.0.8991.1 HDA drivers so the UAD drivers which Windows 11 requires are generic and I had already tried uninstalling the drivers and then installing newer generic UAD drivers and it didn't make a difference. The issue was not there until the Beta Channel for Windows 11 went from the 22000.xxx builds to the 22581.200 build a few days ago when I rebooted. It had worked fine since Insiders with the first available build of Windows 11 in July 2021.

Wish I could help more, but I'm out of ideas on that one... do you have a backup from prior to the upgrade? Maybe restore and attempt the update again?

No I don't because the upgrade was forced, I never knew they would move beta from 22000 to the same build as Developers all of a sudden either. or maybe it could just be a bug with this build and eventually it'll be fixed. I still wonder what the Agent Activation Runtime service is actually for as it is a dependency of the Windows Audio service.

Was looking into this a bit more and it seems before, I had something called "Realtek Hardware Support Application" listed under the Software components section of Device Manager when it was working in the 22000.xxx builds of Windows 11 but that device is no longer showing up anywhere. I have tried using DriverStoreExplorer to remove all devices that is associated with RealTek including using DDU but it seems when I install the pal1000 generic Realtek drivers, it shows Realtek Hardware Support Application is installed in the script but it's nowhere to be found as a device in Device Manager.

That is what I am using since there are no official drivers that will work out of the box, you can upgrade in device manager after pal1000 installs but unfortunately this time it still did not install all the Software Components even when I use Driver Explorer first to delete everything related to Realtek Audio. This time I got Realtek Hardware Support Application but it's now missing the Realtek ASIO device as pal1000 in the script shows 6 things were installed but only 5 is seen. I am sure some things got broken in this build of Windows 11 insders as even Desktop Gadgets no longer seem to work.

You are using the same build as me and whilst after the upgrade my sound was broken - no way to get surround sound - the installation of this package sorted it instantly for me.

What build were you using before this? Remember the package can work differently on different systems as there are some systems that have real Realtek chips while others can have Intel audio that uses Realtek Drivers as it seems the Hardware ID for mines is 8086 which means it's Intel and not a real Realtek chip.

Are you seeing all the components in Software Components?

Sound, Video and Game controllers would show Realtek(R) Audio

Software Components is supposed to show:

Realtek Asio Component
Realtek Audio Effects Component
Realtek Audio Universal Service
Realtek Hardware Support Application

The 6th thing is Realtek Audio Service

I have everything except for Realtek Asio Component currently after using pal1000 to uninstall and then install when I did it last. Before this build and ever since the first Beta Insiders build that was in the Beta Insiders channel, it always had all 6 things, now it seems to only have 5 things and the sound doesn't work.

This is the Hardware IDs you wanted which suggest that I have a real Realtek Audio?

Yeah, it seems your Hardware IDs are 10EC vendor ID 10EC - Google Search
which means your audio hardware is Realtek

while mines is made by Intel that uses Realtek drivers so that's probably why the drivers work differently. I didn't mean the current winver but did your audio work in earlier non 225xx.xxx builds of Windows 11? That's why it's hard to troubleshoot as you also do not have the Realtek ASIO device either but yours is working. I did manage to get sound working in everything but it was basically uninstalling everything including deleting the driver files without installing anything which gives Realtek Audio I believe v6.0.8656 and then kill the Windows Audio Service and start that service again. Forgot to ask but do you have the following service, the characters at the end seems to be random either each time the system boots or when the service is restarted.

Realtek HWID on wimorrison's PC that mentions SUBSYS (or subsystem) ID beginning with 1849xxxx means that the "vendor ID" 1849 is ASRock

latest ASRock based official Realtek audio driver for SUBSYS ID "18491204" is v6.0.9301.1 direct from ASRock

DO NOT ASSUME the 6.0.8991.1 driver from Dell is an HDA driver when in fact IT IS A UAD/DCH DRIVER! - I check the contents of the 8991 Dell Realtek audio driver package myself using 7zip and it is a UAD driver bundled with the bloated IntelHDASST controller bus driver - your Realtek audio device in your Dell laptop is an Intel SST based Realtek audio hardware which is used mostly in modern laptops & some all-in-one desktop pcs and internally connected thru a different interface than a normal/standard hd audio interface

SST = smart sound technology

edit - I might try looking myself for newer Realtek driver versions from Dell that may work for your Dell laptop that might support ID 1028087C

@erpster4 - You know more about Realtek Drivers than I do as yu are the expert on tenforums and station-drivers. I guess what I can try later is the Dell package and see what happens. I always thought the UAD driver was called Realtek Audio and the HDA was called High Definition Audio. But regardless, what's the best way to remove all traces of Realtek drivers before attempting anything else. I think it was the Realtek thread on tenforums that said Windows 11 requires 6.0.9200 as a minimum for official Windows 11 support.

I dont know if this is relevant but I had a similar problem. I uninstalled the existing Realtek Drivers and installed 6.0.9239.1
I then unplugged the speaker cables and plugged them back in and for each one the HD Audio Manager asked which speakers that jack related to, when I finished I rebooted and all was well. Hope this helps...

I tried that already but this is a laptop so the speakers are hardwired. I usually have headphones plugged in so I already did what you mentioned which would bring up the Max Waves audio popup that asks what I plugged in.

Just a update and I was correct, it was Windows 11 build 22581.200 Beta that caused the problem with both the no sound and Windows Gadgets and Sidebar not working. As soon as I updated to Windows 11 Build 22593.1, the sound works again without issues. I used the Dell supplied 6.0.8991.1 and it works fine but the problem is it is missing the Realtek Hardware Support Application device which is required for Realtek Audio Console to download and install properly as @erpster4 has mentioned in another thread either here or tenforums.

This is what it looks like and notice it does have Realtek Asio Component as a device.

I used pal1000's v6.0.9215.1 generic drivers which installs the following and I updated all the Software components to v11.0.6000.1026 and the Realtek(R) Audio driver to v6.0.9316.1 as Cliff S said this was the best sounding and in all instances including after rebooting, the sound is still working. pal1000's generic driver package would have the Realtek Hardware Support Application but not the Realtek Asio Component, is there a way to manually add the Realtek Asio Component to Device Manager?

So either Windows 11 Build 22593.1 fixed the issue or the update is making Windows refresh and check everything since it was one long upgrade process. What I don't know is if a repair in-place install with 22581.200 would have fixed the issue or not.
