As seen in my comment in post #20, the only difference between a browser page as a app and using the Edge based browser app is really one has notifications and one doesn't. If notifications was not needed, one is better off just using either messenger.com or the facebook.com messenger page on the browser.

I'm not a Facebook user. I only use the Messenger because that is all that some people in the world use.
A bit of trivia for you. In some Asian countries such as the Philippines, you can still use Messenger even if you don't have any data left.

I'm the opposite, I am a Facebook user because all my contacts are there so naturally it's the only way to do private messages with them. The other IM's are people I don't even know personally even though Facebook includes some of those too. Interesting that data isn't needed for Messenger. Even though I thought when it came to Asian countries, WeChat/Weixin is what's used in China. WhatsApp seems to be used by people in Hong Kong and LINE is what's used in Japan/South Korea. Not sure about the other countries since many people refuse to use Messenger as even if they add people on LinkedIn, Facebook which includes Messenger, they will always ask within a day to have better communications on Telegram or WhatsApp and ofcourse all of these including the ones who randomly messages on telegram are usually scammers.

I'm still using a browser at messenger.com.
The new app doesn't offer anything more.

go to Messenger's site. install Messenger as PWA (browser app). drag a shortcut from your start menu apps list to C:\Temp, or another directory. you can use the ahk code if you want to modify the directory or timing. this will launch the PWA, activate the Messenger window and minimize it. I have attached the below script already compiled as an .exe, if you want to use C:\Temp as the directory (remove .txt extension and add .exe extension).

I have audio off so the icon in the task bar with the amount of unread messages is useful. Facebook in general has one problem. There has been someone who keeps adding me ando others to a group chat and everyone including me has tried leaving, only to be added back within seconds.

I'm testing Messenger Plus as an alternative to the official PWA option that we now have.

It's working well. It starts with Windows, and also has a system tray icon. It doesn't start minimized to the tray when Windows starts, so I've requested that option, and the author has agreed.

No, they will not let anyone leave. Facebook Messenger Group Chat unlike Facebook Groups does not have the function when you leave to never allow anyone to add to the same group instead. Basically I am friends with one person as Facebook Friends but I do not even know when we added each other or who sent the original friend request and I have never talked to that person before. Then ofcourse the chat allows anyone to add anyone but 2 persons appeared to add like 90% of the people and then another 2 added the remaining 10% in a chat with 200 persons and when anyone leaves, they will get added back within 2 seconds flat which seems like it's really AI or some bot. Unlike Facebook Group Chat's in Messenger, these are Messenger Group Chats
which were seen even in the app before it went Microsoft Edge app. It's more of a spam/annoying group. Mute Notifications fixed the problem with me still in the group. I wonder how they find targets when I talked to other people they added in private, they are not friends with the person who added them and they claimed blocking does not stop the person from adding them.

I'll give this a try later and run it alongside the PWA just to see how they compare. Hope it support the Facebook Groups like the PWA which was missing in the Messenger Desktop app but was on messenger.com. Hopefully it has all features that are in both the PWA and the Messenger Desktop app other than what you have mentioned. A good idea might be, whoever sees a new version first to just post a brief post about it in the thread. Thanks for mentioning it.

I think I should just mention the version number as of this writing which is v1.2 so anything newer should be mentioned when whoever sees it first. Is there a link to a thread on reddit where you discovered Messenger Plus?

There are a few Reddit threads where it's mentioned. I'm not a big Reddit user, but I think this might be the main one.

That was the only one I found in that group with Messenger Plus. When I Googled, it kept pointing to Verizon's Message+. LOL. I thought there was a thread that the author actually posted in or atleast was mentioned when you said the author was on reddit to know the author is on reddit. Am I correct that the notification icon only has the dot but not the number of unread messages?

There is another Reddit thread where it's mentioned.
The dot is just an indication of new messages. It also pops up as new messages arrive.

I meant I still have not found that thread yet as it seems things can also be in two groups, the Facebook and the Facebook Messenger group.

Yes, it seems like the dot is the only thing available. I usually leave some messages unread for months to years as those are usually from people who I don't know that I have accepted their friend request so it's not important so if it showed the bubble with the notification count, if there was a bigger number like if it was already 3 and then I saw a number bigger than what I saw before, it indicates newer messages. The pop up would only be useful if one is actually at the computer while the message arrives. I have earphones plugged in to the notebook so there is no sound instead of muting the volume and the earphones are only in my ears when I actually want to listen to audio.
