I have successfully downloaded Money Sunset Pro on my new laptop. I am trying to "restore backup" from my old laptop so all my accounts are now on the new laptop. I have saved my backup from my old laptop onto a flash drive and then copied it to the new laptop to the desktop. When I try to restore it to the MS Money app on my new laptop it says 'the path name is invalid. Please use a valid path name." Then gives me the option of "OK" or "Send Error Report". How can I get my accounts in MS Money from my old laptop to my new one???? TIA

You can just copy the money data files to Documents, the default directory where money saves its data, or you can copy to a different directory and tell money about it. Then just open the data file you want to use after you open money. You don't need to use "restore" or use a backup program.

copy as you would any file......Money uses the Documents folder by default for its data files, so copy the data files from the old computer Documents folder to a usb drive, then move the usb drive to the new computer and copy the data files from it to the new computer Documents folder.

I have looked in my documents file and the only MS Money files there are the backups. When I copy them to my usb drive, and then try to move them from the usb drive to the new computer it gives me the same message of the path name is invalid..... :(

The MS Money program has to be reinstalled from scratch on the new machine. After that you can open your old money files in the program.

Money data files are named "*.mny" where "*" depends on the particular way you set them up but by default are named "My Money.mny". Those files are in the "Documents" folder by default. You may have other names in other locations if you created other active files (I have put several years in one file and then started a new one for the next several years to keep the file sizes down. Been using this program for 25 years or more). There are other "*.mny" files for portfolio tracking and other purposes, but i don't use them and suspect that a program this far out from the last update would not work correctly. There are also "*.mbf" files which are backup files of your "My Money.mny" database. You can take all of these and copy them from the old computer to the USB drive and then to the new computer "Documents" folder. If you cannot find the "*.mny" files on the old computer try opening MS Money on the old machine and click on the "Files" menu and then "Open". you should see the directory where the active "*.mny" files are.

When you open your MS Money program on the new machine click "Files" menu in the upper left and then "Open". Navigate to the folder you put the "*.mny" files in (Documents) and click on the file you want to open. MS Money should remember this as the default folder and filename thereafter.

Let me know if that does not work.
